Chapter 6 - The Breach at North Gate

The tires of my command sedan shrieked against the wet tarmac as I wrenched the steering wheel hard to the left, hurling the vehicle onto the perimeter access road. Beside me, NCIS Agent Vance braced his hands against the dashboard, his knuckles white as bone, his eyes glued to the distant flash of red and blue emergency strobes pulsing against the overcast morning sky.

"She didn't know," Vance muttered, his voice tight with a desperate, defensive urgency. "Marlo, listen to me. Delphine is stubborn, she’s bitter, and she’s blindingly naive when it comes to men who flash cash and drive expensive cars, but she is not a traitor. If Bram used her catering van to run those crates through the gate, he hijacked it. He had to."

"He used her ID badge, Vance," I snapped back, my foot pressing the accelerator down until the engine roared in protest. "Every commercial vehicle entering a secondary checkpoint requires the driver’s biometric verification or active digital keycard. Delphine’s pass was registered to that van this morning. Whether she handed it to him willingly or left it on the console of her prep kitchen doesn't change the fact that her vehicle is currently plowing through a military barricade with millions of dollars in classified avionics in the back!"

The radio on the center console crackled to life before Vance could reply.

"All units, North Gate! The target vehicle has breached the outer hydraulic bollards! Repeat, the white catering van has rammed the secondary security gate and is heading eastbound onto Route 58! Military police pursuit is active, but the van is heavily modified—it’s carrying reinforced plates!"

My fingers tightened around the steering wheel until the leather groaned. Route 58 was a high-speed arterial highway that fed directly into the sprawling commercial shipping yards along the Elizabeth River, offering a dozen different escape routes into underground warehouses and unmonitored container depots. If Bram reached the industrial grid before we intercepted him, those microprocessors would vanish into the black market forever, and the paper trail linking his shell corporation to high-ranking officials in the Department of Defense would vanish with them.

"Hold on," I warned Vance, yanking the gearshift down and cutting hard across the median grass to bypass a stalled line of civilian traffic.

The sedan surged forward, leaping onto the highway on-ramp just as a blur of white metal—the battered side of Delphine’s catering van with its faded logo scraped raw—roared past us in the opposite lane, sparks flying from a grinding front axle.

And sitting directly in the passenger seat, staring out the shattered window with absolute horror frozen on her face, was Delphine.
