Chapter 8 - The Family Secret

"You're out of options, Bram," I said, keeping my service pistol leveled steadily at the center of his chest as I advanced across the gravel. Agent Vance flanked my left, his own weapon drawn and his face dark with suppressed rage.

"Options?" Bram chuckled, a low, smooth sound that made my skin crawl. He cast a sideways glance toward the passenger door of the van, where Delphine was frantically shoving herself free of the crumpled door frame, coughing from the thick plume of radiator smoke. "Marlo, sweetheart, you think this is about three crates of microprocessors? You think some stolen tech is the grand finale?"

Delphine stumbled out of the van, her hair wild, her eyes wide with shock as she stared between Bram and me. "Marlo... he told me we were just picking up catering supplies from the warehouse. He said you were trying to ruin my business because you were jealous of my success! He showed me paperwork—official Department of Defense paperwork—that said you were abusing your authority!"

"It was all a lie, Delphine," Agent Vance said quietly, lowering his weapon just enough to look his cousin dead in the eye. "Bram has been using your company name as a front to wash kickbacks for five years. He didn't just use your van today—he’s been using your clean corporate tax ID to move contraband across state lines without raising IRS red flags."

Delphine staggered backward, her hands flying to her face. "No... that's not true. He loved me. He supported me when nobody else in the family would!"

"He used you because you were the perfect blind spot," I said without taking my eyes off Bram. "A disgruntled sister with a chip on her shoulder is the easiest person in the world to manipulate into staging a public distraction."

Bram’s smile didn't fade. In fact, it widened into something sharper, more dangerous. He slowly lowered his raised hands and reached into his inner jacket pocket.

"Freeze! Don't move your hands!" Agent Vance barked, stepping forward.

"Relax, cousin," Bram laughed softly, pulling out a slim, gold-encased smartphone. He tapped the screen twice. "I wouldn't shoot me just yet. Because if my phone doesn't receive a manual status ping every fifteen minutes, an automated script currently running on a secure cloud server is going to automatically release the unredacted digital audit files of every single senior procurement officer in the Seventh Fleet—including your beloved commanding admiral, Marlo."
