Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Blood

The silence in Dominic Castellano’s Manhattan mansion was heavy, suffocating, and charged with a quiet fury that made the air feel thin.

Dr. Sterling packed his medical bag with rapid, practiced movements, his brow glistening with sweat despite the air conditioning. He stood, wiped his hands on a clean linen cloth, and looked directly down at Dominic, who remained crouched by the marble floor where Emma lay.

"She has a severe concussion, fractured ribs on her right side, and extensive internal bruising," Dr. Sterling said, keeping his voice low so as not to disturb the unconscious girl. "I’ve administered a heavy painkiller and stabilized her breathing, Mr. Castellano. But she needs to be in a hospital. Moving her further could cause complications if there’s internal bleeding."

Dominic did not look up immediately. His eyes were fixed on the silver embroidery of the Castellano family crest on Emma’s torn collar—the crest soaked in her blood.

"She is not going to a hospital, Doctor," Dominic said, his voice entirely even, devoid of any tremor. "The medical records will be subpoenaed or accessed within the hour by whoever sent those men. She stays here. You and your equipment stay here until she is fully recovered. Name your price."

Sterling swallowed hard, knowing better than to argue. "I'll have my assistant bring the heavy monitoring units from my uptown clinic within the hour."

As the doctor hurried out of the room, Marco stepped closer to Dominic, his massive frame tense. "Boss, the men who did this... they didn't just target a random civilian. They knew Emma wore your crest. They knew she’d bring it back here. It’s an open declaration of war."

Dominic stood up slowly. He was a man in his forties who carried himself with the lethal grace of a predator that had spent years pretending to be a gentleman. The tailored charcoal suit he wore had cost more than a small car, but right now, it looked like armor.

"It’s not a declaration of war, Marco," Dominic said softly, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked streets of Manhattan. "It’s an invitation. Ilya Kolov has spent the last three years hiding behind his shipping ports in Brooklyn, testing my boundaries, wondering if age or legitimacy had softened me."

"Kolov is a butcher," Marco growled. "If we hit his docks tonight—"

"We don't hit his docks tonight," Dominic interrupted, turning around. His dark eyes were as cold as winter stone. "Kolov wants a public spectacle. He wants me to react like a mobster from an old movie so he can rally the other syndicate heads against me. We are going to give him something much worse than bullets."

"What's that, Boss?"

"We are going to dismantle his entire operation brick by brick, starting with the bank accounts that fund his little army," Dominic said, walking toward his private study. "And then, when he has nothing left to hide behind, we will introduce him to the man he thought was dead."
