Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Red Hook

The Red Hook shipping yards in Brooklyn smelled of salt, rotting wood, and diesel exhaust. At 2:00 AM, the massive container terminals were mostly deserted, save for the private warehouse at Pier 42—the undisputed stronghold of Ilya Kolov.

Kolov’s operation was notorious. Law enforcement never touched him because his bribes were sewn deep into the municipal fabric of New York. But Dominic Castellano didn't care about municipal bribes.

A sleek black sedan rolled silently past the security checkpoint, its transponder broadcasting a cloned corporate code that the gate guards didn't dare question. The car stopped fifty yards from Kolov’s private office building.

Dominic stepped out into the damp chill of the night, adjusting his leather gloves. Marco stepped out behind him, carrying a heavy titanium briefcase.

"Boss, the guards are packing automatic weapons," Marco noted quietly, eyeing the two heavily armed men standing outside the warehouse rolling doors.

"They're carrying toys, Marco," Dominic said smoothly. "Let's go say hello to Ilya."

They walked across the asphalt without hiding. The two guards at the door immediately raised their assault rifles, shouting in Russian, "Stop right there! Private property! Turn around or—"

The guards never finished their sentence. Before they could disengage their safeties, two silenced cracks echoed softly into the night air. Both men dropped instantly, pulled backward into the deep shadows of the loading dock by unseen hands from Dominic’s elite security detail.

Dominic didn't break his stride. He walked straight up to the reinforced steel door of the office building, raised his right hand, and struck the metal twice with the heavy gold signet ring on his index finger.

Clang. Clang.

A security camera above the door whirred, panning down to focus directly on Dominic’s face.

Inside the monitoring room, someone recognized him immediately. The heavy electronic locks buzzed, and the steel door swung open.

Standing in the doorway was a scarred enforcer named Yuri, holding a suppressed pistol with a shaky hand. "Castellano... you're dead man walking. What the hell do you think—"

Dominic bypassed him without a word, brushing past the trembling enforcer as if he were nothing more than a minor inconvenience on his way to an important meeting.

"Take me to Kolov," Dominic commanded, his voice echoing down the concrete corridor. "I believe he's expecting an apology."
