Chapter 3 - The Matriarch’s Entrance

The brass handle depressed fully, and the heavy door swung open to reveal Eleanor Waverly standing on the threshold. She was dressed in a tailored charcoal wool coat, her silver hair styled in a flawless chignon, her diamond earrings catching the sterile hospital lights. Behind her stood two private security operatives in dark suits—men from the firm my family kept on permanent retainer for situations requiring discretion and heavy persuasion.

Eleanor stepped into the room, her sharp blue eyes sweeping past me without a second glance before landing directly on the hospital bed.

"Honestly, Mara," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with calculated disappointment. "I would have thought you had more dignity than to stage a cheap theatrical stunt in a public maternity ward. Calling Grant in the middle of the night with some hysterical fabrication about children? It's beneath you—though, frankly, entirely expected given your background."

I didn't move from my spot blocking her path to the bed. "She didn't stage anything, Mother."

Eleanor paused, her gaze finally shifting to me. A flicker of surprise crossed her face, quickly masked by the practiced condescension she used whenever she needed to recalibrate her control over me.

"Grant, darling," she said softly, taking a step forward. "You look exhausted. This woman has spent the better part of a year manipulating you, dragging our family name through the mud with her little corporate espionage scandal, and now she’s trying one last desperate gambit to secure a payday. Step aside. The hospital discharge papers have already been signed by our legal team, and the boys are being transferred to a private pediatric facility in Georgetown."

The sheer audacity of it—the cold, calculated efficiency with which she had already arranged to spirit my newborn sons away before I had even processed their existence—hit me like a physical blow.

"Signed by whose authority?" I asked, my voice dangerously low.

Eleanor’s smile didn't reach her eyes. "By mine, Grant. As the head of the Waverly Trust, I have full legal guardianship over any un-emancipated heirs born to this family until paternity and maternal fitness are formally established by our courts. And since Mara was legally designated as mentally and professionally compromised during our civil filings—"

"Those filings were based on forged ledgers," I interrupted, stepping forward until I was towering over her.

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed just a fraction. The pristine mask slipped for a single, fleeting microsecond, revealing the razor-sharp predator underneath. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me," I said, my voice cutting through the hum of the medical equipment. "You forged the signatures on the subsidiary audit, Mother. You used Mara as a scapegoat to cover up the three million dollars you drained from the research fund to bail out Uncle Richard's failing real estate venture. And then you pushed us into a fast-track divorce so she wouldn't have legal standing to subpoena the family archives."

The silence in the room became absolute. Even the steady beeping of the monitors seemed to recede into the background.

For the first time in my life, Eleanor Waverly looked genuinely stunned. But recovery was instantaneous. She turned her head slightly toward the two security guards waiting in the hallway.

"Grant is clearly overwrought," Eleanor said smoothly, her voice dropping into a tone of chilling command. "Escort him out to the car. And bring the infants."

The two men in suits stepped across the threshold, moving with the cold, practiced precision of hired muscle.
