Chapter 7 - The Sub-Vault Labyrinth

The maintenance hatch slammed shut behind us with a heavy, echoing clang, followed immediately by the sound of boots stomping onto the concrete floor of the corridor we had just vacated.
"They're in the sub-vault," a muffled male voice shouted from the other side of the steel wall. "Sweep the perimeter and check the utility access panels!"
I scrambled forward on hands and knees through a low, dust-choked ventilation tunnel, my heart hammering against my ribs. The woman slid through the narrow opening behind me with feline agility, pulling a heavy iron security bolt across the hatch just as fingers rattled the outside handle.
"Quiet," she whispered, crawling past me into a wider subterranean service corridor illuminated by flickering overhead fluorescent tubes that hummed with a high-pitched whine.
I hauled myself to my feet, wiping grime from my face, my eyes locked on her. "You haven't told me your name. And if you expect me to trust you while you're dropping bombshells about my father's death, you better start talking fast."
"Name’s Miller," she said over her shoulder, not breaking stride as she checked the corridor ahead with a compact Glock held at a low ready. "And I don't give a damn whether you trust me, Mr. Waverly. I care about stopping the shipment of guidance components your family’s defense subsidiary is illegally transferring to a rogue broker out of Baltimore tonight. Your safety deposit box key isn't a key to financial documents—it's a physical hardware token that unlocks the master decryption server in Vault Level 3."
I pulled the small brass key from my coat pocket, staring at the jagged teeth in the fluorescent light. "Mara told me it was Box 312."
"Box 312 is a decoy," Miller said, stopping at a heavy steel fire door marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. She reached into her jacket, pulled out a modified digital key-programmer, and slapped it against the electronic card reader. The red LED blinked green with a sharp electronic chime. "Your mother knew you'd come looking for answers if things went south at the hospital. She set up Box 312 as a honey pot to trap you or anyone looking into the trust."
"If Box 312 is a trap," I said, a cold realization settling deep in my gut, "then the security team waiting outside the hospital... the guards at the bank... they weren't trying to stop me from opening the box."
"They were herding you straight to it," Miller finished, throwing the heavy door open and stepping into a vast, darkened underground chamber lined with rows of secure server racks and reinforced bank vaults. "And by the time you arrived, they would have caught you red-handed with forged corporate treason documents, ensuring your arrest, your permanent silence, and the complete consolidation of the Waverly empire under your mother's control."

Before I could process the full scale of the betrayal, the high-pitched whine of the overhead fluorescent lights cut out completely, plunging the entire vault level into absolute, suffocating darkness.
