Chapter 7 - The Judas of Park Avenue

The sleek hum of the dual-monitor cooling fans was the only sound in the cavernous seventy-second-floor boardroom as Victoria Sterling finally turned to face him. Her silver-streaked blonde hair was immaculate, her tailored navy suit as sharp as ever, and her expression entirely devoid of guilt.
Evan didn't rush across the room. He walked slowly, his hard leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the imported Italian marble floor. His dark eyes locked onto hers with a piercing intensity.
"Six years, Victoria," Evan said quietly, stopping ten feet from the conference table. "Six years of building this empire together, of sitting across from me in boardrooms, of managing the board. And you decided to sell out to the highest bidder."
Victoria smiled—a cold, thin expression that didn't reach her eyes. "Sell out, Evan? No. I’m simply realigning my assets. You built Cole Global on ruthless execution and total domination, but you forgot one fundamental rule of high finance: empires built by a single man always fall to a coalition."
"A coalition?" Evan’s jaw tightened. "Who? Julian Vance is finished. His Swiss accounts are frozen, and his backers liquidated him."
"Julian was a blunt instrument," Victoria replied smoothly, walking over to the bar cart and pouring herself a finger of aged whiskey. "Useful for creating chaos, yes, but he was a distraction. While you were busy dismantling his little syndicate in Geneva, the true stakeholders of the global shipping lanes were reorganizing right beneath your nose."
She took a slow sip of whiskey and raised her glass toward the massive windows overlooking the glittering expanse of New York City.
"They don't want a partner, Evan. They want a liquidation. And the board of directors has already signed off on a vote of no confidence. By midnight, your voting shares will be frozen under federal compliance review due to 'systemic security vulnerabilities'—vulnerabilities that I lovingly planted in our architecture."
Evan didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. Instead, a slow, terrifyingly calm smile spread across his face.
"You think you planned for every contingency, Victoria," Evan said softly, reaching into his jacket pocket. "You assumed I relied entirely on the primary Geneva grid."
Victoria’s hand froze halfway to her mouth, her eyes darting toward him. "What are you talking about?"
Evan pulled out a sleek, titanium-encased mechanical key and placed it gently on the edge of the mahogany table.
"I never trusted a single COO with total access to the master keys," Evan said, his voice dropping into a whisper that carried across the silent room. "Project Janus wasn't just about Julian Vance. It was my internal honeypot designed to catch the rat gnawing at the foundation of my own house. And congratulations, Victoria... you just took the cheese."

Before Victoria could lunge for the external hard drive on the desk, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom suddenly blew wide open.
