Chapter 9 - Shadows on the East River

The damp, salt-heavy air of the Brooklyn navy yard clung to Evan’s tailored coat as he stepped out of the black SUV. The area was a ghost town of rusted corrugated metal warehouses, decaying shipping containers, and cracked asphalt bathed in the flickering orange glow of dying streetlamps.
His private security team parked three hundred yards back, staying out of sight per his strict instructions. If the mastermind wanted a private conversation, bringing an army would only ensure the target vanished into the dark.
Evan walked steadily down the center of the deserted access road toward Warehouse 42, the rhythmic sound of his shoes crunching against gravel echoing across the dark waterfront. The East River rolled heavily beside him, churning black water reflecting the distant lights of Manhattan.
When he reached the towering double doors of Warehouse 42, they were standing slightly ajar, a single sliver of pale yellow light cutting across the dark concrete floor inside.
Evan pushed the heavy metal door open with his hand, stepping into the cavernous, freezing interior.
"I'm here," Evan called out, his voice ringing clearly through the empty warehouse. "Come out of the shadows. We're done playing games."
A slow, mocking chuckle echoed from the upper catwalks high above.
"Always so impatient, Evan," a smooth, cultured voice drifted down from the darkness. "You tear through my operatives, you dismantle my proxy corporations in Geneva, and you hand my COO over to the feds in record time. I have to hand it to you—you really are every bit as ruthless as the rumors say."
A figure stepped out from the shadows of the catwalk, descending the rusted metal staircase slowly. As the figure moved into the dim pool of light cast by an overhead halogen lamp, Evan’s eyes narrowed.
It wasn't a corporate rival. It wasn't a Swiss financier or a disgruntled board member.
It was Sarah Sterling—Victoria’s younger sister, and the former Chief Compliance Officer of the World Bank's international asset recovery division, a woman who was legally declared dead in a boating accident off the coast of Monaco three years ago.
Evan stared at her, his mind calculating the impossible timeline. "Sarah. The Federal Maritime Report stated your yacht burned to the waterline."
Sarah smiled, stepping onto the concrete floor just twenty feet away from him, her hands tucked neatly into the pockets of a sleek trench coat. "Bureaucracy is so easy to manipulate when you write the global compliance protocols, Evan. And while you were busy building shipping empires, I was building something much more powerful: a shadow ledger that controls every major debt portfolio on the planet."

She paused, her smile turning razor-sharp. "And tonight, Evan Cole... your empire officially files for bankruptcy."
