Chapter 4 - Behind the Velvet Rope

The Sovereign Club smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and decades of inherited snobbery. The doorman, a stiff-backed man named Arthur who had treated me like invisible furniture for twenty years whenever I tagged along to family banquets, blinked twice as I pushed through the heavy oak doors.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Whitmore," Arthur stammered, his eyes darting down to my tailored charcoal coat and then back to my face, struggling to reconcile the independent tech consultant he remembered with the woman holding an elite black-tier membership card.
"Arthur," I nodded smoothly. "Private dining room B, please."
"Right this way, ma'am."
When I pushed open the frosted glass doors of private dining room B, the scene inside looked like a tragicomedy of fallen aristocracy.
Patricia sat at the head of the polished oak table, her hair slightly out of place, her face drawn and pale under the chandeliers. Richard sat beside her, his tie loosened, sweating profusely despite the room's chill. Natalie was pacing near the window, wringing her hands so hard her knuckles were white.
The moment the door clicked shut behind me, Patricia sprang to her feet.
"You actually came," Patricia breathed, her voice a mix of disbelief and venom. "You had the absolute audacity to show your face here after what you did to your father and sister?"
I didn't answer immediately. I walked slowly to the center of the table, pulled out the primary guest chair—the one my father always insisted on occupying—and sat down with deliberate slowness. I crossed my legs, rested my hands on the armrests, and looked around the room as if I were inspecting a poorly maintained hotel room.
"It’s amazing how quiet this place is when you don't have to listen to you all complain about the service," I said calmly.
Richard slammed his fist against the table, rattling the crystal water pitchers. "Enough of this gamesmanship, Nicole! You’ve gone completely insane! You think because you pulled some cheap legal stunt with a shady shell company that you own us? We gave you life! We raised you!"
"You raised Natalie to be a trophy and me to be a servant," I countered, my voice cutting through his roar like a scalpel. "And the moment I had a child outside of your approved social timeline, you treated us like garbage."
Natalie stepped forward, her eyes flashing with tears of pure rage. "You ruined my life! Terrence’s investors pulled out because of that eviction notice! We have forty-eight hours before our bank accounts are seized!"
"Then I suggest you start packing your things," I replied smoothly. "Because unlike the Westchester house, I don't intend to offer you a grace period."
Patricia’s face twisted into an ugly, desperate mask. She leaned across the table, her voice dropping into a harsh, trembling whisper that exposed the absolute terror hiding beneath her bravado.
