Chapter 8 - The Price of a Proxy

David closed his laptop with a sharp snap that cut off the audio recording. The silence inside the SUV suddenly felt heavy, charged with the dangerous current of corporate espionage and calculated collateral damage.

"If Evan Cole orchestrated this," David said carefully, his eyes fixed on mine in the rearview mirror, "it means your entire revenge playbook wasn't just your own invention. He handed you the matches, pointed you toward your parents' house, and let you strike the spark so his own hands would stay clean."

"He didn't just hand me the matches," I said, my voice trembling with a mixture of humiliation and blinding fury. "He built the fireplace."

For four years, I had believed I was the silent operator—the clever single mother who had quietly outmaneuvered her narcissistic family from the shadows. I had taken pride in the cold precision of the eviction, the quiet satisfaction of watching my mother panic, the sweet justice of seeing Natalie lose her social standing.

To discover that I was merely a useful idiot in a multi-billion-dollar corporate chess match made my stomach churn.

"What do you want to do?" David asked, his professional detachment slipping away to reveal genuine concern. "We can halt the proceedings against your parents. We can step back, audit the holding company, and cut ties with any subsidiary linked to Cole Enterprises before the Tuesday vote."

"No," I said, staring at my reflection in the dark, rain-streaked window.

David frowned. "Nicole, if you play chicken with a man like Evan Cole, you aren't fighting a family dispute anymore. You're standing in front of a freight train."

"Let it come," I turned my head, my eyes locking onto David’s with a cold, absolute resolve. "Evan thinks he used me to clear his path to the North River zoning rights? Fine. But he made one fatal miscalculation."

"What's that?"

"He forgot that I’m the only one holding the master keys to the primary land trust," I said, a dangerous smile touching the corners of my mouth. "He thinks I’m a proxy? I'm about to become the anchor that sinks his entire development deal."

My phone buzzed against the console.

I picked it up. It wasn't an anonymous audio file this time. It was a calendar invitation from a verified corporate domain: Cole Enterprises - Executive Boardroom, Floor 50. Meeting requested by Evan Cole. Immediate attendance required.
