Chapter 4 - The Breaking Point

"Chloe," Justin hissed under his breath, his eyes wide with horror as he shot me a warning glare. "Watch your tone."

"No, Justin, you watch my tone," I fired back, pushing my chair back just an inch from the table. "For two weeks, I have opened my home, cleaned up after uninvited guests, accommodated medical schedules, and sat quietly while your mother insults my cooking, my decorating, and my housekeeping. And tonight, she brought in an auxiliary unit just to ensure the humiliation was properly supervised."

"We were just making conversation!" Virginia gasped, pressing a hand dramatically to her chest. "Honestly, Brenda, did you ever imagine my son would marry someone so hostile? So utterly lacking in basic hospitality?"

"Hostile?" I laughed, a bitter, humorless sound. "Virginia, from the moment you walked through my front door, you have treated my home like a hostile takeover. You move my things, you criticize every meal, you undermine my marriage, and you sit there playing the victim the second I ask for basic respect."

"How dare you speak to my sister like that!" Brenda snapped, slamming her fork down onto the table so hard the water glasses rattled. "Virginia is a guest in your home! You should be kissing the ground she walks on for taking care of my nephew!"

"Taking care of him?" I stood up completely from the table, looking down at the collection of toxic relatives gathered around my dining set. "Justin is thirty-four years old. He has a wife, an apartment, and a career. He doesn't need his mother managing his diet or his marriage. And I certainly don't need two aging bullies dictating how I run my household."

"Chloe, that is enough!" Justin shouted, standing up abruptly, his chair legs scraping loudly against the hardwood floor. His face was flushed with anger, not at his mother or his aunt, but at me for disturbing his precious illusion of peace. "You are embarrassing me! You are embarrassing my family! Go to our room right now!"

I stared at my husband. The man I had shared a bed with, built a life with, and trusted with my heart. In that single moment, looking at the furious, defensive slant of his shoulders, I saw the truth that had been hiding behind his silence all along.

He wasn't neutral.

He was on their side.

"I'm not going anywhere, Justin," I whispered, my voice shaking with a dangerous, icy calm. "You want your mommy to run your life? Fine. But she's not going to do it in my house anymore."

I grabbed my car keys from the counter by the hallway, my hands trembling with adrenaline.

"Where do you think you're going?" Virginia demanded, her eyes narrowing triumphantly. "Running away like a child because you can't handle a little constructive criticism?"

May you like

"I'm going to get some air," I said, walking toward the front door. I paused with my hand on the knob, looking back at the four of them sitting in my dining room, surrounded by untouched food and poisoned air. "When I get back in an hour, I expect this apartment to be empty. Pack your bags, Virginia. Your vacation is over."
