Chapter 6 - The Packed Duffle

The words hung in the quiet bedroom air like a physical blow, heavy and suffocating.

I stood frozen in the doorway, my hand still resting on the polished brass handle, staring at the canvas duffel bag sitting beside my husband's neatly packed suit carrier. The digital clock on the nightstand blinked mutely: 9:42 PM. Just an hour ago, I had walked out of this apartment to catch my breath, believing we could salvage something from the wreckage of our evening. Instead, Justin had made his final choice, packing his entire life into a pair of bags while I was gone.

"You're leaving?" I asked, my voice cracking slightly despite my best efforts to keep it steady. "You're actually walking out because I told your mother her vacation was over?"

Justin finally raised his head, his eyes avoiding my direct gaze as he reached down to pick up his duffel bag by the strap. "It's not about her vacation, Chloe. It's about how you treated my family. You humiliated my mother and my aunt at our own dinner table, and then you gave me an ultimatum in my own home."

"In our home, Justin!" I stepped forward, the disbelief finally breaking through the shock, turning into a sharp, hot anger. "My name is on the lease. I pay half the rent. And that wasn't a dinner table, it was a firing squad orchestrated by your mother to prove I wasn't good enough for her precious son!"

"She's stressed about her health tests," Justin repeated defensively, his jaw tightening as he shouldered the bag. "She's going through a difficult month, and instead of showing a little grace, you blew up over a few comments about food. I'm going to the hotel to make sure she's okay. We need some space to clear our heads."

"Space," I repeated bitterly, watching him walk past me toward the hallway. "Is that what you call abandoning your wife to run back to mommy's hotel room?"

He stopped at the bedroom threshold, looking back at me with an expression of profound, exhausting disappointment—as if I were the unreasonable one, as if I were the villain in this twisted family dynamic.

"I'll call you tomorrow when things calm down," he said quietly.

Before I could answer, he stepped out into the hallway, pulled the front door shut behind him with a soft, final click, and left me completely alone in the silent, half-empty apartment.
