Chapter 6 - The Flashbang Blindness

The white-hot detonation of the flash-bang tore the subterranean air into jagged, deafening shards. A wall of blinding magnesium fire erased the cavernous silo in a microsecond, replacing color and shape with a violent, ringing glare that drove spikes behind Daniel’s eyes. The concussion wave hit his chest like a sack of wet cement, knocking the breath from his lungs and sending him staggering backward against a rusted pillar. His ears shrieked with a high-pitched, permanent-sounding whine that drowned out every external sound, leaving only the frantic thumping of his own pulse.

Through the milky haze of lingering smoke, heavy combat boots slammed against the concrete.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads!"

The shouts ricocheted off the damp concrete walls, amplified by tactical helmets and gas masks. The North End operators who had dropped from the rafters dissolved into the shadows with ghost-like efficiency, slipping back up their nylon lines before the first federal beam could sweep the upper rafters. They left behind two dead syndicate thugs and a vacuum of pure, unadulterated chaos.

Daniel blinked rapidly, forcing his watering eyes to focus through the haze. Vincent was gone. In the blinding flash of the grenade, his brother had used the concussive cover to dive behind a massive concrete support strut, slipping through a narrow drainage utility tunnel that led straight toward the freezing riverbank.

"I said drop the weapon, Whitmore! Do it now!"

The voice belonged to Agent Vance, a hardened federal investigator whose face Daniel had memorized from financial filings months ago. Vance’s assault rifle was leveled squarely at Daniel’s chest, the laser sight painting a harsh red dot against his black wool coat. Behind Vance, tactical officers swarmed the center of the room, two of them diving to cut the plastic zip-ties binding Elena to the wooden chair.

Daniel didn't drop his gun immediately. His fingers remained locked around the checkered steel grip, his instincts screaming at him to pursue Vincent into the dark. But as he saw an officer pull a hunting knife and slice through Elena’s restraints, letting her slump forward into the arms of a paramedic, the fire in his veins turned to cold lead.

Slowly, deliberately, Daniel opened his hand. The heavy automatic pistol clattered loudly against the concrete floor.

"Hands behind your head! Interlace your fingers!" Vance barked, stepping forward, his boots crunching on broken glass. Two tactical officers rushed Daniel, kicking his legs apart and slamming him hard against the damp concrete pillar. Plastic cuffs bit brutally into his wrists, tight enough to draw blood.

"You're making a mistake, Vance," Daniel said, his voice cold, steady, and entirely devoid of panic. He didn't flinch as they frisked him, stripping away the encrypted satellite phone and his wallet. "The man you want—the man who funded Sarah’s Haven and laundered millions through shell companies—just crawled down the drainage tunnel toward the river."

May you like

Vance stepped up close, his breath fogging in the frigid air, a humorless smirk twisting his mouth. "Oh, we know all about the shell companies, Mr. Whitmore. We've been tracking those accounts for six months. And every single routing number, every digital signature, and every corporate ledger bears one name." Vance leaned in, tapping Daniel’s chest with the barrel of his sidearm. "Yours."
