Chapter 7 - The Siege of Ward 402

The heavy steel doors of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital’s private maternity wing bore the jagged, smoking gouges of thermal breaching charges.

Inside Room 402, Meline Castellano stood braced against the metal bed frame, her hospital gown soaked with sweat, clutching her swollen abdomen as a fresh, agonizing contraction wracked her body. The rhythmic beeping of the fetal monitor had accelerated into a frantic, high-pitched hum.

Bang! Bang!

Heavy tactical boots pounded against the linoleum corridor outside, accompanied by shouting and the unmistakable shatter of reinforced glass.

Meline’s breath came in ragged gasps. She knew Vincent’s men had secured the floor earlier, but the sheer scale of the assault echoing through the building meant the defenses had been completely overrun. She glanced desperately around the room. There was no other exit—only the private bathroom and the reinforced glass window overlooking the alley four stories below.

The doorknob rattled violently. Then, the entire wooden door blew inward with a deafening roar as a breaching charge tore the frame apart in a cloud of splintered wood and white smoke.

Two figures in unmarked black tactical gear stepped through the haze, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the room with disciplined, lethal intent.

Meline backed up until her lower back pressed against the window sill, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She grabbed a heavy steel IV pole from beside the bed, holding it like a spear with trembling hands.

“Step away from the bed, Mrs. Castellano,” the lead operative commanded, his voice modulated through a tactical mask, stripping away any human cadence. “We have orders to extract you. Alive, if possible.”

“Get away from me!” Meline screamed, mustering every ounce of fury and adrenaline left in her exhausted body.

Before the operative could take another step, a shadow dropped silently from the shattered transom above the doorway.

It was Maria, the undercover protection detail Vincent had stationed inside the ceiling crawlspace. With lightning speed, Maria brought her combat knife down in a vicious arc, slicing through the lead operative’s shoulder harness before spinning him around and driving the butt of her pistol into his helmet. The man collapsed like a felled tree.

The second operative pivoted instantly, swinging his rifle toward Maria.

Meline didn't hesitate. With a cry of exertion, she hurled the heavy steel IV pole directly at the operative’s back. The metal base struck him squarely between the shoulder blades, throwing off his aim just enough for his rifle blast to shatter the overhead fluorescent light fixture in a shower of sparks.

Maria capitalized on the distraction, closing the distance and delivering a devastating roundhouse kick that sent the second operative crashing backward out into the hallway.

“We have to move, Mrs. Castellano—now!” Maria panted, blood dripping from a shallow cut on her forehead as she grabbed Meline by the arm. “The whole floor is compromised!”

Meline gasped, clutching her stomach as another sharp contraction hit her, bending her double. “I can't... the baby is coming, Maria. I can't walk down four flights of stairs.”

Maria’s face went pale as she looked down and saw a dark stain spreading across the hospital sheets. “God help us.”
