Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the System

Inside the rushing black SUV, Vincent Castellano’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the rain-slicked highway leading toward the hospital.
The burner phone in his console buzzed violently. He hit the speaker button with one finger.
“Boss!” Luca’s voice crackled through the audio system, laced with frantic urgency. “We intercepted the radio frequencies from the Harrington tactical unit. They didn't just send a ground team to the hospital. They triggered the emergency lockdown protocols of the entire city grid to trap our reinforcement units in transit.”
“I don't give a damn about the city grid!” Vincent roared, steering the SUV hard around a stalled commercial truck, tires screaming against the wet asphalt. “Is my wife secure?”
“Boss... that’s just it,” Luca hesitated, the line crackling with static. “The primary security feed for Ward 402 just went dark. But before it cut out, our internal tech logs showed a secondary data transmission originating from inside the hospital’s core mainframe. Someone inside is overriding the building’s security system from a terminal.”
Vincent’s mind raced. An internal override? The Harrington forces hadn't just broken in—they had inside help. Someone within St. Jude’s administration had been bought off to let them bypass the biometric locks.
“Trace the terminal,” Vincent ordered, his voice dropping into a lethal, frozen tone. “Find out exactly who is tapping into the mainframe.”
“Working on it now... boss, wait,” Luca’s voice paused, a look of sudden realization dawning on him. “The encryption key being used to bypass the firewall... it’s not a corporate signature. It’s an old military-grade bypass code.”
Vincent frowned, taking a sharp turn onto the hospital approach road. “Whose code?”
“It belongs to Arthur Whitaker, boss. Meline’s late father.”
Vincent slammed his foot on the brakes as the SUV skidded to a halt outside the shattered emergency entrance of St. Jude’s Memorial. The front lobby was littered with abandoned medical carts, shattered glass, and the ominous silence of a war zone.
Vincent killed the engine, drew his sidearm, and checked the chamber with a sharp metallic snap.

“Lock down the perimeter,” Vincent told Luca over the comms as he threw his door open into the freezing rain. “If anyone tries to leave this building alive, make sure they don't have legs to do it with.”
