Chapter 10 - The Horizon

The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in deep shades of amber and violet as I stood on the private balcony of my penthouse apartment.

The penthouse had once belonged to Aaron and me. Every piece of custom furniture, every minimalist art piece, every neutral color palette had been chosen to reflect his tastes, his status, his world. But today, the movers had finally finished clearing out his personal belongings. The closets were empty of his suits, his expensive watches were gone from the master dressing room, and his name had been permanently removed from the building's resident directory.

For the first time in four years, the space felt entirely my own.

I held my grandfather’s key between my fingers, feeling the cool, heavy metal catch the evening light. The revelation of the sub-trust hadn't just expanded my financial standing; it had rewritten the entire map of my family's history. Aaron and Helen had spent years treating me like a decorative ornament, believing they were exploiting a weak link in a wealthy family, completely blind to the fact that they were merely scratching the surface of an empire built by people who understood power long before Silicon Valley ever existed.

My phone chimed on the glass table inside the living room. It wasn't an emergency alert, nor was it a frantic call from a disgraced executive. It was a simple, encrypted notification from Marcus Vance, confirming that the final corporate dissolution papers for Prescott Technologies had been officially filed with the state registry. The company Aaron had built on my back was dead, its assets safely absorbed back into the Vance Family Trust, waiting to be rebuilt under new leadership—my leadership.

I walked back inside, sliding the key into my pocket, and poured myself a glass of vintage Bordeaux—the exact same vintage Aaron used to hoard for his exclusive business dinners, drinking it alone while I waited for him to come home.

As I took a slow sip, looking out at the glittering expanse of the city below, I knew the journey wasn't over. The corporate war was won, and the betrayal of my marriage had been thoroughly answered. But as I thought about the vast, uncharted global portfolio waiting for me in my grandfather’s vault, I realized that reclaiming my past was only the beginning.

The real work was about to start. And this time, no one would ever tell me where to sit.
