Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The phone line went dead with a sharp click as Richard Gable slammed the receiver down at his end, likely bolting out of the hotel lobby to find an emergency signal or intercept the board members before the news leaked to the financial press.
In the conference room, Marcus walked over to the refreshment bar and poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy crystal tumbler, sliding it across the table toward me. I didn't touch it, keeping my hands folded neatly in my lap as I watched the data streams update on the massive wall-mounted monitors.
"He's going to land in Chicago in less than two hours," Marcus noted, leaning against the window frame as he looked out over the glittering downtown skyline. "The moment his private jet touches down, his phone is going to explode with notifications from his investors, his PR team, and probably the SEC if the rumor mill moves fast enough."
"Let it explode," I said, my mind racing through the tactical chess board we had just upended. "Aaron relies entirely on the illusion of unstoppable momentum. Every single venture capitalist backing him did so because they believed he was a self-made technological messiah. If they find out his core intellectual property is tied up in bitter marital litigation and asset repossession by his ex-wife's family trust, their confidence will evaporate overnight."
Julian stepped away from the projector, his expression turning slightly more serious as he tapped a fresh file on his tablet. "There’s a complication you need to anticipate, Alyssa. It’s not just about the code or the servers. It’s about the patents. When Aaron restructured Prescott Technologies into an umbrella corporation last year, he quietly assigned three key biometric patents to a shell company registered in Delaware. A shell company managed exclusively by Jasmine’s brother."
I narrowed my eyes, looking up at Julian. "Jasmine's brother? What is his name?"
"Derek Vance—no relation to us, thankfully," Julian said with a grimace. "He’s a mid-level patent troll who specializes in IP laundering. Aaron must have transferred those titles over about six months ago, probably as a contingency plan or a quiet gift to keep his new secretary happy. If those biometric patents aren't re-secured under your family trust before the bankruptcy filings hit, Aaron could claim he still holds independent market viability through those secondary assets."
A cold realization swept over me. For all my focus on the core server infrastructure and the big-picture financial leverage, Aaron had been quietly carving away pieces of the empire behind my back, using his new secretary as the conduit for his private maneuverings. It wasn't just an emotional betrayal on that private jet; it was a calculated, long-term erosion of my stake in a company I had sacrificed my youth to build.
"How fast can we execute an emergency injunction against Derek Vance's shell company?" I asked, my voice dropping into a register that made even Julian straighten up.
"Forty-eight hours minimum," Julian replied, typing rapidly on his tablet. "Unless..."
"Unless what?"
"Unless we can prove that the assets were transferred using corporate funds fraudulently funneled out of your family trust’s seed account," Marcus interjected, walking back toward the table. "Which we actually can, provided we pull the bank wire logs from eighteen months ago. But to do that legally without tipping off Aaron’s legal team beforehand, we need a physical signature from someone who was an executive officer at the time of the transfer."
I stared at Marcus, letting the implications of his words wash over me. "Who?"
"Richard Gable," Marcus said quietly. "He signed off on the internal compliance memo for those patent transfers. He knew they were legally questionable from day one, but Aaron bullied him into keeping quiet."
I stood up from the chair, smoothing down the front of my silk coat. The passive, invisible socialite wife Aaron thought he knew was entirely gone, replaced by the heiress who had been trained from childhood to protect her family’s legacy at any cost.
"Then let's go visit Mr. Gable," I said, grabbing my handbag. "Before Aaron's jet even touches the runway in Chicago, I want Richard sitting right here in this conference room, signing an affidavit that hands us those biometric patents on a silver platter."
Marcus and Julian exchanged a sharp glance of mutual approval.

"I'll have the car brought around to the private elevator," Julian said, his fingers already flying across his phone. "And Alyssa? Welcome back."
