Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Two weeks later, the rain had stopped, replaced by crisp autumn sunshine that streamed through the windows of my apartment in Detroit.
The nursery was finally finished. The second car seat base was securely clicked into place in the back of my car. The crib sheets were clean and soft, and my son was sleeping peacefully in his bassinet, his small chest rising and falling in a steady, perfect rhythm.
The legal fallout had been swift and absolute. Cassian Medical Center accepted Samuel’s immediate resignation to avoid a public compliance scandal, and the subsequent financial audit of Cassian Holdings LLC resulted in a settlement that transferred ownership of the downtown condo and the majority of Samuel's liquid assets directly into a trust for our son.
Jessica Vance had transferred to a regional clinic three hours north after Arthur filed an airtight fault-based divorce petition that left her with zero claim to the marital estate.
My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter beside a cup of herbal tea.
It was a text from Arthur: The final asset transfer cleared the escrow account this morning. Clean break.
I replied with a simple thumbs-up emoji, locked my phone, and set it down.
There were still hard days ahead—moments when the echo of that 3:00 AM phone call would flare up like an old injury, reminding me how fragile certainty could be. But as I walked into the nursery and leaned over the bassinet to brush a stray curl from my son's forehead, I knew something fundamental had changed.
I wasn't the woman who stood frozen in a puddle of water on a stormy night, waiting for a husband to save her.
I looked down at the tiny, perfect fingers curled against my baby's cheek.

My phone buzzed one last time—not from Arthur, but from an unknown local number. I picked it up, expecting a spam call or a legal follow-up, and stared down at the screen.
We found the second safety deposit box registered under Cassian Holdings at the downtown federal credit union, the text read. It wasn't opened by Samuel. It was opened by Jessica—three days before your water broke.
