Chapter 9 - The Settlement Offer

Judge Sterling didn't wait for Samuel’s excuses. He dissolved the emergency injunction with a single stroke of his pen, restored full access to all joint and personal accounts, and ordered an immediate financial audit of Cassian Holdings LLC under court supervision. Furthermore, he noted that the hospital board would be receiving a complete transcript of the proceeding regarding the falsified medical presence logs.

As the chambers began to clear out, Samuel stood up from the defense table, his face pale, and walked over toward the exit where Arthur and I were standing.

"Camila, wait," Samuel said, his voice dropping into that old, familiar tone of quiet persuasion. "We don't need to air our dirty laundry in front of federal auditors and hospital boards. We can handle this privately. Let's go home and talk about this like adults."

I looked at him—really looked at him. The man I had trusted with my deepest vulnerabilities, the man who had held my hand after our first loss while quietly building an escape route behind my back.

"The last time I trusted you to talk like an adult, Samuel, you were standing in a hospital hallway while your mistress laughed in the background," I said, my voice steady and cold. "There is nothing left to talk about."

"You're making a catastrophic mistake," Samuel hissed, his calm facade finally cracking into raw, desperate anger. "You think Arthur is helping you out of the goodness of his heart? He’s using you to tear down my practice so he can file a retaliatory civil suit for his own divorce! You're just a pawn in his game!"

Arthur didn't flinch. He stepped smoothly between Samuel and me, looking down at the younger man with absolute contempt.

"My divorce proceedings are my business, Samuel," Arthur said calmly. "And your practice was built on sand. You signed your own termination papers the moment you thought your wife wouldn't look at the numbers."

Before Samuel could reply, the heavy oak doors of the chambers pushed open, and two senior administrators from Cassian Medical Center walked in, accompanied by hospital security. They didn't look at Samuel with professional respect anymore; they looked at him the way hospital boards look at a liability they needed to excise immediately.

"Dr. Anderson," the lead administrator said coldly. "The board has received the compliance report from the court clerk. You are suspended from active rotation pending an internal ethics review. Hand over your hospital badge and keys immediately."

Samuel stared at the security guards, then back at me. The realization that his career, his status, and his carefully constructed life were evaporating in real time finally settled over him like a physical weight. He didn't say another word. He unclipped his ID badge from his lapel, dropped it onto the table, and walked out of the room without looking back.
