Chapter 6 - The Weight of Inheritance

The diner air felt suddenly heavy, smelling of scorched coffee and stale grease. I looked down at the manila envelope resting on the worn laminate table between Marcus Vance’s coffee cup and my half-empty mug. Sophie was quietly tracing the pattern of the plastic placemat with her small finger, oblivious to the storm brewing around us.

"Julian?" I repeated, the name tasting like cold iron on my tongue. "Julian is the one who managed the family’s overseas holdings. He’s the quiet one. The brother who stays out of the crossfire."

"That's what everyone in the Ashford family is conditioned to believe," Marcus said, leaning forward, his voice a low murmur. "Julian plays the part of the dutiful younger brother, the reliable pillar who never asks for the crown. But a man who doesn't want power is often the most dangerous kind—because he collects leverage instead of attention."

I opened the flap of the envelope. Inside lay a stack of printed digital logs, certified routing certificates, and corporate assignment records. The shell company, Aegis Holdings, had been established five years ago—just weeks before Damian and I were married. The digital signature attached to the incorporation documents utilized my old freelance credentials, a set of keys I had used back when I consulted for small accounting firms before Damian swept me into his world.

"How could someone access my old credentials?" I asked, looking up at Marcus. "They were stored on an encrypted drive I left in my apartment in Boston when we moved to Manhattan."

"A drive that Damian’s administrative team packed up and transferred to the penthouse archive storage room," Marcus replied grimly. "Anyone with keycard access to the third-floor private vault could have plugged it in. And Julian has held a master override key for that vault since the company restructuring two years ago."

The realization hit me with sickening clarity. This wasn't a random leak or a federal fishing expedition. It was an orchestrated trap designed to frame me as the financial mastermind behind Damian’s alleged illicit asset routing. If the federal prosecutor indicted the shell company, the trail would lead straight to my name—protecting the Ashford family name while making me the sacrificial lamb.

And the most terrifying part was what it meant for Damian. If Julian had been systematically undermining his older brother’s empire from the inside, the betrayal went deeper than corporate espionage. It was a fratricidal war fought with ledgers and forged signatures.

"Does Damian suspect anything?" I asked, my fingers tightening around the edge of the table.

"Not yet," Marcus said. "Damian is currently tearing Manhattan apart looking for you. His entire focus is fixed on the fact that his wife and daughter walked out. When a man like Damian is blinded by personal loss, he misses the shifting ground beneath his feet. That's why Julian chose this exact window to push the federal investigation forward."

I looked over at Sophie, who had found a small crayon in her jacket pocket and was happily scribbling on a paper napkin. She deserved a life free of shadows, federal subpoenas, and ruthless family vendettas. Running away to a motel in Vermont hadn't hidden us; it had simply isolated us in the crosshairs.

"I'm not going to let Julian use me to destroy Damian," I said quietly, a cold, hard resolve settling over my bones. "And I'm not going to let him ruin my life either."

Marcus studied me for a long moment, a faint, grim smile touching his lips. "Good. Because if you had run any further north, Evelyn, I would have lost all respect for you. What's your first move?"
