Chapter 8 - The Digital Breach

The reply didn't come in minutes; it came in seconds.

The screen flickered, and the status indicator on the secure server jumped from dormant to active as a direct, encrypted audio-video handshake was initiated from the Manhattan penthouse. I clicked accept, and the camera feed blinked on.

Damian filled the screen. He was sitting at his mahogany desk in the penthouse study, the overhead lights casting harsh shadows across his sharp jawline and unsmiling mouth. He looked exhausted—his tie was loosened, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his forearms, his gray eyes burning with an intense, volatile fire that made the hair on my arms stand up. But beneath the anger, there was a stark, unmistakable flash of raw shock.

"Evelyn," his voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through the audio speakers with absolute authority. "Where are you?"

"That doesn't matter, Damian," I said, keeping my tone level and unyielding, refusing to shrink back from the camera. "Did you open the file I sent?"

"I opened it," Damian said slowly, his eyes narrowing as he leaned closer to the monitor. "Aegis Holdings. Subsidiary routing through Zurich. It's clean on the surface, but the underlying transaction hashes point directly to a secondary ledger managed by my brother's private investment firm."

"It's more than a ledger, Damian," I said, my voice steady. "Julian used my old freelance credentials—the ones stored in the vault—to forge the incorporation documents for Aegis. To the federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, it looks like I'm the financial architect funneling your corporate assets offshore. The indictment was designed to land on my desk, not yours."

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

Damian’s face didn't move. For three seconds, he looked like a statue carved from granite. Then, the color slowly drained from his face, leaving his skin an ash-gray tone. The silence in his study seemed to bleed through the speakers, heavy with the terrifying weight of a realization he had never anticipated.

"Julian," Damian whispered, the name escaping his lips like a curse.

"He's been building a parallel portfolio for over two years," I continued, pushing the advantage. "While you were busy managing the boardrooms and consolidating your public empire, your brother was systematically bleeding your reserves and setting up a fall guy. Me."

Damian slammed his fist down onto the mahogany desk so hard the camera shook on its mount. A low, dangerous sound escaped his throat—not a shout, but the primal growl of a predator who realized another beast had been living inside his den.

"I will tear him apart," Damian said, his voice dropping into a register that made my blood run cold. "I'll strip him of every share, every title, every cent he ever earned, and leave him with nothing."

"If you go after him with a sledgehammer, you'll trigger the federal audit, and the public fallout will destroy what's left of your company before you can prove the signatures were forged," I said sharply. "Which is exactly what Julian is counting on. He wants you to overreact so the feds step in and freeze everything."

Damian stopped. He stared at the screen, his chest heaving as he fought to regain control over his legendary temper. He looked at me through the camera—not as a runaway wife to be reeled back in, but as an equal across a battlefield.

"What do you propose, Evelyn?" he asked, his voice returning to its chillingly calm authority.

"We don't attack him," I said. "We corner him. And we do it on my terms."
