Chapter 10 - Checkmate

“Well, well, well,” Marcus Vance said, his voice smooth, cultured, and dripping with chilling condescension as he bounced a crying Lily gently against his shoulder. “Look who decided to come home for breakfast.”

“Mom! Let her go!” I screamed, taking a desperate step forward, but Daniel caught my arm, his whole body trembling with rage as he stared at Marcus with eyes that looked capable of murder.

Diane stepped out from the doorway, her designer blouse immaculate, her face cold and devoid of any maternal warmth. She didn't look like a grandmother holding her granddaughter; she looked like a general surveying prisoners of war.

“You never know when to stay down, do you, Claire?” Diane said, her voice dripping with venom. “You just had to dig, didn't you? You and your little detective husband, running around playing heroes with things you don't understand.”

“You’re sick, Diane,” I choked out, tears streaming down my face as Lily reached out her small arms toward me, sobbing, ‘Mommy, help me!’ “She’s your granddaughter! How could you bring her into this?!”

“She’s a liability,” Marcus corrected smoothly, stepping further into the hallway, his fingers resting casually near the edge of his coat. “Just like your uncle Robert was twenty-five years ago. Speaking of which... where is your dear uncle? I assume he didn't send you here empty-handed after all this trouble.”

Before I could answer, the front door of our house splintered open with a deafening crash that echoed down the hallway.

Heavy boots thudded against the hardwood floor, and a chorus of authoritative voices shouted through the house:

“Federal Marshals! Nobody move! Drop your weapon!”

Marcus’s face instantly drained of color, his calm composure fracturing into pure panic as three armed agents poured down the hallway, their tactical rifles raised and locked directly onto him.

Diane shrieked, stumbling back against the wall as Detective Miller stepped through the front entry, flanked by two officers.

And walking calmly behind them, hands in his pockets with a faint, satisfied smile, was Uncle Robert.

Marcus panicked, his hand darting inside his coat toward a concealed holster, but Daniel moved with lightning speed—lunging forward, tackling Marcus hard against the drywall, and ripping the weapon away just as the federal agents swarmed the hallway, pinning Marcus to the floor.

As Lily slipped from Marcus’s grasp, I lunged forward, catching her in my arms and pulling her tight against my chest, burying my face in her hair as she sobbed.

Detective Miller stepped over to my mother, who was now trembling uncontrollably against the wallpaper, and pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Diane Miller,” Miller said coldly, snapping the cuffs around her wrists. “You’re under arrest for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy, and child abduction.”
