Chapter 9 - The Trap at Dawn

The sky was just beginning to streak with a pale, bruised shade of gray by the time Robert’s sedan crept back into the residential neighborhood surrounding our house. The rain had slowed to a miserable, freezing drizzle, coating the empty suburban streets in a slick sheen of water.

We left Robert’s car parked two blocks away behind a shuttered community center, walking the final stretch through the shadows of the neighboring oak trees to keep out of sight.

When we reached our house, everything looked quiet. The porch light was still on, casting a yellow glow over our front door. But as I scanned the curb across the street, my stomach tightened into a knot.

A sleek, black sedan with tinted windows was parked half a block down, its engine idling quietly in the early morning chill.

“They’re here,” Daniel whispered, his hand sliding into his jacket pocket, gripping his keys like a weapon.

“Good,” Robert muttered, pulling the burner phone from his pocket. “That means Marcus took the bait.”

The plan was dangerously simple: Robert would use the burner phone to call Diane directly, drawing her and her associates out into the open under the pretense of a midnight meeting to exchange the original ledgers for a ransom. Meanwhile, Daniel and I would slip through the back kitchen door, secure Lily, and contact Detective Miller to deploy a federal tactical unit that had already been briefed on the historic embezzlement ring.

We slipped around the side of the house, moving like ghosts across the wet grass. The motion-activated floodlight above our back deck clicked on, illuminating the sliding glass door.

I held my breath as I unlocked the back door with my spare key, sliding it open just enough for us to slip inside.

The kitchen was dark, warm, and smelled faintly of the strawberry jam Lily had been eating the morning before. Everything looked normal—too normal.

“Lily?” I called out in a sharp, terrified whisper, rushing down the hallway toward her bedroom.

I pushed her bedroom door open, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Her bed was empty. The blankets were tossed aside, and her favorite stuffed rabbit was lying abandoned on the floor.

A cold wave of absolute horror washed over me.

Before I could scream, the overhead hallway light clicked on with a sharp snap.

Standing in the doorway of the master bedroom, leaning casually against the doorframe with a cold, triumphant smile playing across her lips, was my mother.

May you like

And standing right behind her, holding a terrified, crying Lily in his arms, was a tall, silver-haired man I had never seen before in my life—Marcus Vance.
