Chapter 1 - The Uniform in the Hallway

The heavy brass handle of the hospital door turned with a sharp, mechanical click that seemed to echo off the pale green cinderblock walls. My husband, Marcus, froze mid-stride, his arrogant smirk instantly dissolving into a mask of hollow shock as two uniformed patrol officers flanked the doorway. Behind him, my mother-in-law, Martha, let out a sharp, indrawn breath, her bony fingers clutching her quilted handbag like a shield.

“Officer, there must be some mistake,” Martha recovered quickly, her voice sliding into that oily, ingratiating tone she reserved for authority figures. “My daughter-in-law here is simply hysterical. She lost her baby this morning—a tragic accident, a fall in the backyard—and grief makes people imagine terrible things. We’ve been nothing but supportive.”

The lead officer, a tall man with a weathered face and a silver-flecked mustache named Sergeant Brooks, didn't even glance at her. His eyes locked directly on Marcus, who was now sweating profusely under his cheap plaid shirt.

“Mr. Vance,” Brooks said, his voice dropping into a flat, authoritative register. “Step away from the door, please. Keep your hands where we can see them.”

“On what grounds?” Marcus stammered, his bravado completely evaporating as he took an involuntary step backward. “We’re just grieving family members! You can’t just walk in here and—”

“We received a verified emergency transmission regarding severe physical abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and domestic assault resulting in third-trimester fetal demise,” Brooks interrupted, holding up his tablet, which displayed an active incoming audio stream synced directly to my local cloud account. “And right now, the primary witness is inside this room.”

I lay motionless against the starched white hospital pillow, the IV line taped to the back of my hand throbbing with every beat of my racing heart. With agonizing slowness, I lifted my right hand from beneath the blanket, clutching the cracked, dark-screened phone in my palm like a weapon.
