Chapter 2 - The Sound of the Cage

Sergeant Brooks stepped past Marcus, his heavy boots squeaking softly against the polished linoleum floor until he stopped right beside my bed. His expression softened from professional sternness into genuine, heavy sorrow when he saw the dark purple bruises wrapping around my wrists—marks left by the hemp rope on the porch pillar.

“Are you Mrs. Vance?” he asked quietly, leaning down just enough so the hallway crowd couldn't overhear.

“My name is Elena,” I whispered, my voice cracked and dry from hours of silent weeping. I held out the phone. “The files are all in there. Every morning at dawn. Every word they said, every threat, every blow. It’s all recorded.”

Outside the open door, Martha’s shrill voice cut through the sterile air. “She’s lying! Show us a warrant! You can’t arrest my boy on the word of a broken, hysterical woman!”

Sergeant Brooks didn't blink. He gently took the cracked phone from my trembling fingers, plugged a secure field-transfer cable into the base unit, and tapped the screen. Within three seconds, the small speaker began to play a low, familiar audio file—the scrape of metal, the heavy thud of the porch boards, Marcus’s harsh breathing, and Martha’s sharp, venomous hiss: “In America, you still fail us.”

The color drained entirely from Marcus’s face in the hallway. He lunged forward toward the door frame. “That’s edited! That’s an AI deepfake! She’s crazy—!”

“Mr. Vance, turn around and place your hands behind your back,” the second officer commanded, his hand resting firmly on the grip of his service weapon as he stepped forward with a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.

The sharp click-click of the cuffs locking around Marcus’s wrists was the sweetest sound I had heard in five years of marriage.
