Chapter 16 - Truth on the Table

Lauren was clearing the plates when I walked into the kitchen. The second she saw my face, she stopped, the ceramic plates rattling in her grip.

"Ethan, Ava, go upstairs and finish your homework," Lauren said immediately.

"Mom, I'm not done with—" Ethan began.

"Now, Ethan," I said, my tone brooking no argument.

Ethan looked between us, saw the tension crackling in the air, and grabbed his sister’s hand. "Come on, Ava. Let's go."

Once their bedroom doors clicked shut upstairs, Lauren turned to me, leaning back against the sink. "Who was in that car, David?"

"Pamela Drake," I said.

Lauren’s eyes widened. "Harrison’s mother-in-law? The one from the title company?"

"She's Crestview Capital’s local representative," I said, pulling out a chair and sitting down. "She's the one who notarized the fraudulent deed. And she just informed me they plan to publish the default notice on Wednesday."

Lauren sank into the chair opposite me, burying her face in her hands. A muffled sob escaped her throat. "Oh God. David... they're really going to take it. After everything you survived... we're going to lose the house anyway."

"Look at me, Lauren," I commanded softly.

She lifted her tear-streaked face.

"We are not losing this house," I told her. "I spent eleven months protecting foreign airspace. I am more than capable of defending eighty feet of Virginia real estate. But I need the absolute, unvarnished truth from you right now. No omissions. No trying to protect Greg. No trying to spare my feelings."

Lauren wiped her cheeks with the cuffs of her sweater. "I swear to you, David. Anything."

"When Vance brought you those papers at the country club... did Major Harrison ever come by the table?"

Lauren froze. Her breath caught in her throat.

"Lauren?"

"He... he didn't sit down," Lauren stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "He was at the bar with some other officers. He came over, shook Marcus’s hand, and said something like... 'Glad to see you're taking care of Mitchell's family while he's downrange.' I thought he was just being supportive. Like command staff looking out for a spouse."

"Harrison was in on it," I murmured, the pieces snapping together with terrifying precision. "Harrison wasn't just checking in. He was verifying Vance’s target."

Major Kevin Harrison had been passed over for lieutenant colonel twice. He was swimming in personal debt from a messy divorce before marrying Pamela Drake's daughter. He had access to the personnel files, the brigade’s financial hardship surveys, and the deployment manifests.

Harrison identified the vulnerable households; Pamela Drake forged the title documents through her agency; Marcus Vance acted as the charming investor who stepped in with 'bridge loans'; and Greg was the gullible idiot who greased the wheels from inside the family.

"David," Lauren whispered, terror creeping into her tone. "Harrison is still active duty. He's still at brigade headquarters in Fort Belvoir."

"Not for long," I said.

"What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to use the one weapon Vance and his friends forgot I had," I said, looking across the table at my wife. "The uniform."
