Chapter 20 - The Next Horizon

At midnight, the house was entirely dark.
Lauren was sound asleep in our bed, her arm draped across my pillow.
I was sitting in my study on the first floor, dressed in a faded t-shirt, looking through my personal email on an encrypted tablet provided by the Pentagon's oversight division.
The civil liens were dismantled. Harrison was facing court-martial. Pamela Drake was under federal investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s office. Marcus Vance was trapped in a detention cell awaiting trial.
My family was safe. The house was secure.
Then an alert pinged in the lower right corner of the screen. A high-priority classified transmission from General Sterling’s executive assistant.
I tapped the screen, authenticated my biometric credentials, and opened the message.
*SUBJECT: OPERATION CROSS-CHECK / VANCE TRIAL DISCOVERY*
*Colonel Mitchell,*
*During the forensic extraction of Marcus Vance's encrypted hard drives seized in Zurich this afternoon, the Department of Justice flagged a series of secondary communications that predate your deployment by six months.*
*Vance was not operating alone, nor was this an opportunistic civilian fraud targeting deployed service members.*
*Vance’s primary domestic seed money—including the initial capital used to acquire the predatory notes on your estate—was wired from an account belonging to a defense contractor currently under review by your new unit in the Pentagon oversight division.*
*Attached is the financial wire authorization.*
I scrolled down to the bottom of the attachment.
The company that had financed Marcus Vance’s takeover of my life, the company that had funded the scheme to strip my family of our home while I was in the desert, was *Aegis Strategic Logistics.*
And the executive who had signed off on the six-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer to Vance’s Delaware shell company was none other than retired Lieutenant General Thomas Vance—Marcus Vance's father.
Who had just been nominated by the President to serve as the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness.
The very man who would become my direct civilian superior at the Pentagon on Monday morning.
I stared at the name on the illuminated screen, the blue light reflecting in the dark glass of the study window.

The battle for my house was over.
The war for the Pentagon had just begun.
