Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The silence in the green room was absolute.

On the monitor, Victoria’s steady gaze remained fixed on the lens, waiting. Across the globe, millions of viewers watching the emergency broadcast held their breath, realizing that the corporate dissolution was only the surface layer of a much deeper, more personal reckoning.

Grant felt the blood drain entirely from his face. The Cayman accounts—the secret offshore holdings he and Eleanor had built to fund their escape and secure their independent future—weren't hidden. Victoria had known about them all along. She had simply let him walk right into the trap, signing away his corporate legitimacy while leaving his personal liability completely exposed.

The door to the green room swung open. Thomas Sterling strode in, his face twisted in rage, flanked by two corporate security guards who promptly blocked his path.

"This is a sham!" Thomas barked, pointing a shaking finger at the monitor. "Your wife has committed corporate sabotage! We will invalidate every clause of that trust in federal court by noon!"

"You won't have a court to go to, Thomas," a calm, familiar voice said from the doorway.

Catherine Vance stepped into the room, tossing a thick manila folder onto the table in front of him.

"What is this?" Thomas demanded, opening the folder with trembling fingers.

"That is the federal indictment for securities fraud and corporate espionage, signed by the state attorney general twenty minutes ago," Catherine said smoothly, her eyes glittering with quiet triumph. "It details every dollar your family funneled into Eleanor’s infiltration of Holloway Enterprises. The warrants for your assets—and hers—were executed at dawn."

Thomas stared at the papers, the color draining from his face as he realized his family's legacy had just been traded away for a failed corporate raid. He looked from Catherine over to Grant, who stood paralyzed against the wall, a broken man surrounded by the wreckage of his own ambition.

On the screen, Victoria shifted slightly against her hospital pillows. She looked away from the camera for a moment, glancing down at the three tiny isolettes where her babies slept peacefully, completely untouched by the chaos swirling around their names.

Then she looked back at Grant one last time.

"You wanted out, Grant," Victoria said softly, her voice carrying through the speakers into the quiet room. "You wanted your freedom. Consider yourself completely unburdened."

She tapped a button on her tablet, and the live video feed abruptly cut to black.

In the green room, the monitors flickered off. The shouting of reporters outside in the rain faded into a distant murmur. Thomas Sterling dropped his briefcase and walked out in stunned silence, his career finished.

Grant stood alone in the center of the room. There were no boards left to manipulate, no accounts left to raid, no secrets left to hide behind. The empire he had sacrificed everything to seize had vanished, leaving behind only the cold reality of his own choices.

He slowly walked to the window, looking out through the rain toward the hospital uptown, knowing the glass between them would never open again.
