Chapter 9 - The Glass Boardroom

The twentieth-floor boardroom of the private equity firm overlooked the sprawling expanse of downtown Chicago, the lake gleaming like a sheet of hammered silver beneath the midday sun.

When I pushed open the frosted glass doors, the five senior partners of the firm were already seated around the massive mahogany conference table. The air was thick with tension and the sharp scent of espresso. Nobody was talking. All eyes turned toward me as I walked in, pulling my briefcase behind me.

“Luca,” Marcus Vance—no relation to Arthur, despite the shared last name, and currently the head of the firm's ethics committee—spoke first, gesturing to the empty leather chair at the head of the table. “Please, sit down.”

I took my seat, resting my hands flat against the mahogany surface. I didn't smile, and I didn't offer any pleasantries. In the world of high finance, opening with small talk after an internal fraud scandal was a sign of weakness.

“I assume you’ve all reviewed the forensic audit report I submitted regarding Arthur Vance’s systemic embezzlement and unauthorized asset-raiding?” I asked, breaking the silence before anyone else could speak.

Marcus cleared his throat, nodding slowly. “We’ve reviewed it, Luca. Every single ledger, every offshore wire transfer, and every forged compliance certificate. It’s... devastating. Arthur was a pillar of this institution for twenty years. The board had no idea he was running a shadow syndicate out of our back office.”

“Arthur was a parasite who assumed nobody would ever check his math because he controlled the personnel files,” I replied, my voice calm and unwavering. “He used my wife as a proxy to siphon capital reserves, hoping to frame me when the deficit inevitably imploded.”

Another partner down the table—Elena Rostova, head of investor relations—shifted uncomfortably in her chair. “The DOJ has frozen our secondary liquidity accounts pending the conclusion of the asset recovery investigation. Our institutional investors are panicking. They want to know who is going to steady the ship before the market opens tomorrow morning.”

I opened my briefcase, pulled out a thick bound stack of printed financial projections, and slid a copy across the polished table toward each partner.

“You don't need to steady the ship,” I said, meeting Elena’s gaze directly. “You need to cut the dead weight. While Arthur was busy embezzling, his compliance protocols were riddled with vulnerabilities that left our portfolio exposed to hostile takeovers from syndicates like Vanguard Holdings.”

I tapped my fingers against the document.

“I spent the last forty-eight hours rewriting our risk-assessment architecture. Every toxic asset has been quarantined, every offshore shell company Arthur maintained has been reported to federal authorities for forfeiture, and our primary capital reserves are fully insulated under a secure multi-signature trust.”

The partners flipped through the pages, their eyes widening as they scanned the clean, airtight calculations. The silence in the boardroom shifted from anxious tension to profound, stunned respect.

Marcus looked up from the papers, staring at me with a new expression—one of absolute deference.

“You did all of this while your personal life was collapsing around you?” Marcus asked, his voice low with disbelief.

“In forensic accounting, panic is just a distraction from the numbers,” I replied smoothly. “And the numbers don’t lie.”

Marcus looked around the table, exchanging brief, affirmative nods with the other partners. He then looked back at me, sliding a single parchment document across the table.

“Arthur Vance’s resignation was finalized by federal marshals an hour ago,” Marcus said formally. “The board has voted unanimously. We need a new Managing Partner. Someone who cannot be bought, cannot be bullied, and can trace a lie through a wall of steel.”

I looked down at the contract. The title at the top was clear.
