Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap

Chiến dịch 7

Richard Bennett stared at me as if the floor beneath his handmade Italian loafers had suddenly turned to liquid.

"Alistair Sterling," he breathed, his voice barely audible above the hiss of the suite's radiator. "You're... Alistair's granddaughter."

"The sole heir," Marcus Vance supplied smoothly from the corner of the room, taking a step forward. "Every single commercial note Bennett Enterprises has issued over the past five years was syndicated through Sterling Capital's debt funds. Daniel thought he was negotiating with three different anonymous private banks in London and Zurich. In reality, he was borrowing money from his fiancée's family."

Richard looked between Marcus and me, his chest heaving. The arrogant patriarch who had entered my room five minutes earlier with a bribe had completely vanished. In his place was a desperate, drowning businessman who finally realized how deep the water truly was.

"Why didn't you tell him?" Richard asked, his voice cracking. "If Daniel had known who you were—"

"If Daniel had known who I was, he would have pretended to be faithful," I cut in coldly. "He would have hidden Vanessa Cole in a private flat in Paris instead of bringing her to our wedding reception. He didn't love me, Richard. He loved the idea of a compliant, modest wife who wouldn't ask questions about his late nights or his offshore accounts."

Richard swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. "What do you want, Emily? Tell me what it takes to save the company. Forty years of work went into Bennett Holdings. Hundreds of employees rely on those paychecks. You can't destroy an entire enterprise just to punish my son."

"Daniel destroyed it the moment he brought his mistress into the bridal suite," I said. "Here are my terms. You have two hours."

Marcus stepped forward and placed a thick, blue-backed document on top of Richard's rejected cashier's check.

"Item one," I said. "Daniel resigns immediately as Chief Executive Officer and surrenders his seat on the board of directors. No golden parachute. No severance package. No honorary title."

Richard flinched. "The market will panic if the founder's son steps down without an explanation."

"Then tell them he is stepping down for personal and medical reasons," I replied. "Item two: Daniel signs an uncontested custody agreement granting me sole legal and physical custody of our daughter. He will receive supervised visitation only after she turns one year old, subject to my approval and quarterly drug and lifestyle screening."

"He will never agree to that," Richard protested, his hands trembling. "He's her father!"

"He forfeited his right to be a father when he endangered her health last night," I snapped. "And item three: Vanessa Cole's consulting contract with Bennett Enterprises is terminated immediately with cause for breach of fiduciary duty. All stock options granted to her over the past fourteen months are canceled."

Richard stared at the third condition, and a strange, sudden expression crossed his face. It wasn't shock or anger.

It was panic. A very specific, very ugly panic.

"Vanessa Cole," Richard stammered, looking away from me toward the lakefront windows. "Emily... terminating Vanessa’s contract isn’t that simple."

I narrowed my eyes. "Why isn't it simple? She's an independent contractor on a quarterly retainer. Daniel signed her agreement as CEO. A simple board resolution terminates her before lunch."

Richard didn't answer right away. He ran a hand over his face, looking older than his years.

"Vanessa isn't just an independent consultant," Richard muttered, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "She holds the proprietary source code for our new supply chain routing algorithm. The contract Daniel signed with her shell company last month... it gave her firm the intellectual property rights in exchange for development services."

Marcus Vance instantly stiffened. "What did you say?"

"Daniel was careless," Richard said, his voice laced with venomous regret. "He thought he was being clever. Vanessa told him that by sheltering the software under an external entity, he could protect it from any future marital property division if things went sour between you two. Daniel signed the IP transfer three weeks ago."

A chill ran down my spine.

It wasn't just an affair.

Fourteen months wasn't just a clandestine romance between an arrogant executive and his ambitious consultant.

Vanessa Cole had spent fourteen months systematically setting up Daniel Bennett for a corporate execution. She had convinced him to hide assets from me—assets that she now legally owned.

"Does Daniel know she played him?" I asked.

"Daniel thinks she's his devoted partner," Richard said bitterly. "He thinks she helped him protect his empire. But this morning, at six o'clock, Harrison Cole called me. Not as Daniel's lawyer, but as Vanessa's representative. They are demanding a thirty-million-dollar buyout of that IP contract by five o'clock today, or they license the software to our primary competitor in logistics."

I sat back on the couch, the puzzle pieces clicking together with terrifying precision.

Vanessa hadn't looked ashamed in that hotel room because she hadn't been caught off guard. She had *wanted* me to find them. She had intentionally left Daniel’s ring by the ice bucket. She had stated "Fourteen months" without hesitation because she knew an immediate wedding night explosion would push the company into chaos—the exact chaos she needed to force a buyout before Daniel discovered what she had stolen.

"Where is Daniel right now?" I asked.

"At the corporate headquarters," Richard said. "He called an emergency meeting of the senior partners for ten o'clock. He thinks he can rally the board, use emergency funds, and pay Vanessa off without anyone realizing how badly he botched the contracts."

"He doesn't have the funds," Marcus pointed out. "Halston froze them."

"Which means Daniel is walking into a massacre," I said, a cold, focused clarity settling over me.

I looked at Marcus. "Get my car. Call Dr. Morrison and tell her I'm taking the rest of the day on my feet, but I'll have a nurse accompany us."

"Emily, what are you doing?" Richard asked, eyes wide.

May you like

"I'm going to the board meeting," I said, standing up and smoothing down my clothes. "Daniel thinks he's fighting a minor marital spat. Vanessa thinks she's shaking down an arrogant trust-fund playboy. Neither of them knows who actually controls the room."
