Chapter 4 - The Mask Drops

Chiến dịch 7

At 9:45 a.m., the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of Bennett Tower was packed with tension thick enough to choke on.

Daniel Bennett paced behind the mahogany conference table, his phone pressed to his ear, his face flushed with frantic irritation. He had changed into a navy suit, but his tie was pulled loose, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes.

"Harrison, I don't give a damn what the licensing clause says!" Daniel barked into the receiver. "Vanessa gave me her word that the IP would remain with Bennett Holdings until the restructuring was complete! Tell her to get up here right now!"

He slammed the phone onto the table, breathing heavily.

Seated around the table were seven senior board members, their expressions grim. Papers were scattered across the polished wood—printouts of frozen account notices, loan defaults from Halston Capital, and panicked emails from commercial banking partners.

"Daniel, you have to explain this default notice," one elderly board member said, tapping a pen on the table. "Halston Capital has initiated an immediate debt call on eighty-five million dollars. That's our entire operational runway. Why would an overseas private debt fund trigger a default on a Monday morning without a warning shot?"

"It’s an administrative error," Daniel lied smoothly, though sweat glistened at his hairline. "Our legal team is sorting it out. It has nothing to do with company fundamentals."

"It has everything to do with fundamentals," another director challenged. "There are rumors online that your bride left the Blackwell Hotel in tears at midnight. The press is sniffing around. If this is a personal issue spilling into corporate governance—"

"My marriage is fine!" Daniel roared, slamming both palms down onto the conference table. "Emily is at home resting! She is seven months pregnant and had an emotional reaction to wedding fatigue! Do not bring my family into this boardroom!"

Right on cue, the double glass doors at the end of the boardroom swung open.

Every head in the room turned.

I walked in.

I wasn't wearing a wedding dress, and I wasn't weeping. I wore an impeccably tailored black maternity dress, flat leather boots, and a structured camel coat draped over my shoulders. Flanking me on my left was Marcus Vance, carrying three leather document folios. Flanking me on my right was Dr. Morrison, carrying an emergency medical kit, looking professional and unbothered.

The entire boardroom fell dead silent.

Daniel froze. His jaw dropped, his arms hanging awkwardly at his sides. For three full seconds, he looked like a schoolboy caught stealing from the till.

"Emily?" he stammered, taking a hesitant step forward. "What... what are you doing here? I told you to stay at the house. You shouldn't be traveling in your condition."

I walked straight past him to the head of the conference table—the seat traditionally reserved for the Chairman. Without waiting for an invitation, I pulled out the high-backed leather chair and sat down.

"Take your seat, Daniel," I said, my voice calm, clear, and perfectly audible in the cavernous room. "We have a great deal of business to cover."

The board members exchanged bewildered glances. Several of the older men began to stand up out of reflex, but Marcus Vance raised a hand, signaling them to remain seated.

"Emily, this is an executive board meeting," Daniel hissed, rounding the table, his face contorting in a mixture of fury and humiliation. "You don't have security clearance to be on this floor. Get up. Right now. I'll have my driver take you back to the Gold Coast."

He reached out to grab my elbow.

Before his fingers could touch my coat, Marcus Vance stepped smoothly between us, his tall frame blocking Daniel completely.

"Do not touch her, Mr. Bennett," Marcus said, his tone razor-sharp. "If you make physical contact with my client, security will remove you from this building in handcuffs."

"Your client?" Daniel scoffed, laughing incredulously. "She’s my wife! Who the hell are you?"

"My name is Marcus Vance," Marcus replied, laying a thick document packet before each of the seven board members. "Managing partner of Vance & Sterling LLP, and chief trustee of Halston Capital Holdings."

Daniel stopped dead. The smug, dismissive sneer on his face began to fracture.

"Halston Capital?" Daniel echoed, his eyes darting from Marcus to me. "What does Halston have to do with Emily?"

"Halston doesn't have something to do with me, Daniel," I said, leaning back in the leather chair, folding my hands over my stomach. "Halston *is* me."

A stunned silence smothered the room. One of the senior board members hurriedly opened the document Marcus had provided, his eyes widening as he read the beneficial ownership declaration.

"Good God," the director breathed. "Alistair Sterling’s estate."

Daniel shook his head violently. "No. No, that's impossible. Emily's mother was a teacher. Her father died when she was twelve. She drove a five-year-old Volvo!"

"My mother chose to live a quiet life after my grandfather died," I said quietly, looking directly into Daniel's panicked eyes. "She taught me that real wealth doesn't need to shout. Real wealth doesn't need rented sports cars, leased penthouses, or mistresses on corporate payrolls to prove its worth. But you... you couldn't imagine a woman possessing power unless she rubbed it in your face."

"You lied to me," Daniel whispered, venom suddenly creeping into his voice, replacing the panic with wounded pride. "You let me marry you under false pretenses!"

"I let you marry me because I foolishly believed you loved me," I fired back, my voice hardening. "I believed that when you held my hand at our daughter’s twenty-week ultrasound, you were thinking about our family. But you were already sleeping with Vanessa Cole. You had been sleeping with her for fourteen months."

Gasps rippled around the table. The board members looked from Daniel to me in horror.

"That's a private matter!" Daniel yelled, turning red. "This is a corporate board! You have no authority to sit in that chair!"

"Under the loan covenants Daniel signed last November," Marcus Vance announced loudly to the room, "Halston Capital holds an immediate option to convert its eighty-five-million-dollar debt into seventy percent of the voting equity of Bennett Holdings upon an uncured event of default. The default occurred at 11:43 p.m. last night."

Marcus tapped the table. "As of 9:00 a.m. this morning, Emily Sterling-Bennett controls seventy percent of the voting shares of this company. Daniel Bennett is no longer CEO."

Daniel stumbled backward, catching himself on the edge of the sideboard.

Before he could speak, the glass doors opened once more.

Vanessa Cole walked in.

She was dressed in a sharp ivory pantsuit, carrying a designer leather portfolio, looking composed, confident, and victorious. She hadn't seen me yet; she only saw Daniel standing by the sideboard.

"Daniel, darling," Vanessa purred, gliding into the room with an icy smile. "Harrison told me you wanted an emergency meeting. I hope you’re ready to sign the licensing settlement, because competitor representatives are already waiting in my office across town."

Then she looked up.

Her eyes met mine.

May you like

The confident, predatory smirk on Vanessa Cole’s face vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated shock.
