Chapter 1 - The Weight of Shelter

The howling December wind pressed against the timber walls of Daniel Holt’s cabin, but inside, the heavy silence carried a much sharper edge. Daniel stood frozen beside the hearth, his gaze locked on the stranger resting beneath Margaret’s best wool blanket. Her eyes had just snapped open, wide with a terrifying, unreadable panic as they swept across his five daughters.

Clara took an instinctive half-step forward, holding out a bowl of warm broth. "She's waking up, Papa. She needs something warm."

The woman flinched violently at the sound of Clara’s voice. Her trembling fingers dug into the fabric of the quilt, shielding her swollen abdomen as if the children standing before her represented an imminent threat rather than a rescue party.

"Don't," the stranger gasped, her voice raw and cracking from the frost. "Don't come near them."

Daniel stepped between his eldest daughter and the bed, his movements steady but guarded. "You're safe here, ma'am. The storm's locked outside, and nobody's going to hurt you or your child. My name is Daniel Holt."

The stranger’s gaze darted back to Daniel, searching his weather-beaten face for malice and finding none. Yet the terror in her eyes did not recede; it only shifted into a deep, desperate exhaustion. She tried to push herself up against the headboard, but her strength failed, and she fell back against the pillows with a ragged breath.

"You shouldn't have brought me in," she whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes to track through the soot on her cheeks. "You don't know what you've let into your home."

"Whatever you're running from, it can wait until morning," Daniel replied quietly, keeping his tone firm to mask the sudden unease coiling in his chest. "My barn was open, and my daughters have hearts too big for their own good. Now, rest."

He motioned for Clara, Josephine, Wren, Bess, and Hannah to step back toward the fire. The girls obeyed, whispering among themselves, their young eyes wide with curiosity and a growing sense of mystery. As Daniel walked back to stoke the embers, the stranger turned her head toward the darkened window, murmuring words lost to the roar of the gale. Daniel knew then that the winter storm raging outside was the least of the dangers that had just crossed his threshold.
