Chapter 2 - Dawn and Disquiet

Morning broke gray and blinding over a landscape buried beneath three feet of fresh snow. The blizzard had passed, leaving behind an eerie, muffled stillness across the ranch. Inside the cabin, the smell of roasted oats and black coffee filled the air, but the usual morning routine of chores and cheerful bickering was muted by the presence in the back room.
Daniel stood by the window, scraping a patch of frost clear with his thumb to check the perimeter of the corral. The horses were restless, stamping in the drifts, but his mind was fixed on the bedroom door.
Clara walked up beside him, handing him a tin cup of coffee. "She’s awake again. I took her some water and a little broth. She drank it, but she wouldn't look me in the eye, Papa."
Daniel took the cup, his thumb brushing the rim. "Did she say who she is?"
"No," Clara murmured, her young brow furrowing with a maturity forced upon her by months of managing a motherless household. "She’s terrified, Papa. Not of the cold, and not of dying. She’s scared someone is going to find her here. And she kept asking if anyone came down the mountain road last night."
Before Daniel could answer, a muffled sound came from the bedroom. He set his cup down and pushed the door open.
The stranger was sitting upright, clutching the quilt to her chest. Her dark hair fell in damp tangles over her shoulders, and despite the warmth of the heated stones still resting near the foot of the bed, a fine sheen of sweat coated her forehead.
"You're moving too fast," Daniel said, stopping a few feet from the mattress.
"I have to leave," she said, her voice trembling but resolute. "Every hour I stay here puts your girls in danger. You don't understand what kind of men are looking for me."
"Nobody is coming up this mountain in three feet of fresh snow," Daniel countered, his voice steady. "And I don't turn people out to freeze, regardless of who's looking. Now, what's your name?"
She hesitated, her lips pressing into a thin, white line as she weighed whether to trust him. The silence stretched until the fire crackled in the next room, breaking the tension.
"Elena," she finally whispered. "My name is Elena."
"Elena," Daniel repeated, nodding slowly. "You're safe in this house today, Elena. But if someone is tracking you, we need to know what we're facing. My daughters live here, and I protect what's mine."

Elena looked down at her hands, her fingers trembling as she clutched the wool. "If they find out I'm here, they won't just take me back. They'll burn this place to the ground to cover their tracks."
