Chapter 1 - The First Notification

The cramped boarding room smelled faintly of lemon wax and decades of old wool, a sharp contrast to the antiseptic sting of failure my family expected me to carry. Outside the small, grime-streaked window, the city lights blurred behind a rising autumn drizzle, casting long, bruised streaks of neon across the peeling wallpaper. Sophia stirred once in her sleep, her small hand curling instinctively into the folds of the thin blanket, her breathing quiet and steady.

My thumb hovered over the screen of my phone.

Plan B: Sunday Activated.

The confirmation code from my banking application blinked green, reassuring and final. The monthly automated wire of eight hundred and fifty dollars, designated to the First Boston Mortgage Corporation under Karla’s name, had been severed. For forty-eight months, while Karla posted curated photographs of her designer lattes and weekend getaways on social media, she had remained blissfully unaware that her equity was entirely subsidized by the sister she and my mother routinely humiliated as a parasite.

My phone remained quiet for precisely thirty-seven minutes.

Then, right on cue, the screen lit up with an incoming call displaying Karla’s name, complete with the animated heart emoji she used whenever she needed a favor.

I let it ring. The tinny, rhythmic vibration buzzed against the nightstand, cutting through the low hum of Mrs. Gable’s ancient refrigerator down the hall.

It rang a second time. Then a third.

By the fourth call, a text message flashed across the preview banner: Laura, what kind of sick joke is this? The mortgage portal says my payment failed and my account is flagged for immediate review! Answer your phone right now!

A cold, precise satisfaction settled deep in my chest. I didn't block her number. I simply toggled the device to silent, laid it face down on the scarred wood of the nightstand, and closed my eyes. They had wanted to see how I survived without their roof over my head. Tomorrow morning, they were about to discover how they survived without mine.
