Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Patriarch

The small parlor of the boarding house smelled of dried lavender and floor polish. Arthur was sitting rigidly on the edge of a floral-patterned settee, his grey hair slightly disheveled, his overcoat unbuttoned in a way that revealed the nervous tremor in his hands.

When I pushed the parlor door open, he stood up abruptly, his eyes wide and bloodshot, searching my face for the compliant daughter he thought he knew.

“Laura,” he breathed, his voice cracking with a pathetic vulnerability that made me feel nothing at all. “What is the meaning of this madness? Your mother is beside herself, and Karla is threatening to call the police over this fraudulent eviction notice.”

I closed the door behind me, locking it with a quiet, deliberate click, and walked over to stand by the mantelpiece, crossing my arms over my chest.

“It’s not fraudulent, Arthur,” I said, using his first name intentionally, stripping away the familial title he had forfeited the moment he carried my daughter’s stroller out onto a cold concrete landing. “Every signature on that deed is notarized, valid, and legally binding. You signed over that apartment to protect yourself from medical debt five years ago. You just forgot that once you hand over the keys, you don't get to throw the owner out into the street whenever it suits your mood.”

Arthur staggered back, his knees hitting the edge of the settee as he sank back down, defeated. “We raised you... we gave you a home when your husband threw you out...”

“You gave me a cage and called it a favor,” I interrupted, my voice sharp enough to draw blood. “You took my grocery money, you mocked my freelance work, and yesterday, you stood by while my mother threw my two-year-old daughter’s food in the trash and called me a parasite.”

He opened his mouth to speak, to offer an excuse, a plea, a compromise—anything to salvage his bruised dignity.

Before he could utter a single word, my phone buzzed on the table beside the settee, flashing an urgent notification from my bank’s legal department regarding a second, even larger asset seizure tied directly to Karla’s condo accounts.
