Chapter 10 - The Hidden Ledger

The words hung in the stale office air, casting a heavy, unsettling shadow over the small victories of the morning.

An offshore trust. An alias managed by Arthur.

For all my meticulous auditing of Karla’s mortgage and the apartment deed, I had assumed my parents were merely parasitic pensioners living off my goodwill and their dwindling Social Security. I had never considered that the cruelty driving their entitlement might be masking something far more dangerous—a financial secret they were willing to commit fraud to protect.

“Did you confiscate the remaining documents?” I asked, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp register.

“We secured what was left in the shredder bin,” Harris said, sliding a sealed evidence bag across the desk. Inside was a clump of confetti-cut paper mixed with a partially intact bank header bearing a Swiss routing number and a company name I hadn't heard in years: Veloce Holdings.

The breath caught in my throat.

Veloce Holdings—the exact same corporate entity that Jason and Richard Vance Jr. had been using to launder defense procurement funds downtown.

My father wasn't just a retired, bitter senior citizen caught up in family drama. He was tied directly into the international embezzlement ring that had nearly destroyed my life.

Before I could process the terrifying implications of the discovery, my phone rang. It was an automated text alert from my private security vault downtown, accompanied by a high-priority push notification:

CRITICAL SECURITY ALERT: Unauthorized remote access attempt detected on primary family trust vault. IP Origin: Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
