Chapter 5 - The Unseen Ledger

The digital file transfer took less than twenty seconds. Sitting in the dimly lit corner booth of Carbone, Penelope slid her encrypted flash drive back into her Bottega Veneta clutch, the tiny piece of plastic now holding the keys to the kingdom of the Moretti Syndicate.
"You realize," Penelope said, her voice dropping to a low whisper as she picked up her wine glass, "that if the district attorney's office gets a whiff of what's on this drive, both of us will be looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
"The D'Agostino task force has been trying to build a RICO case against my partners for six years," Lorenzo replied, taking a final sip of his whiskey. "They don't have the manpower or the math skills. That's why they rely on subpoenaed bank records instead of tracking the real-time offshore layering."
He signaled for the check, though the waiter approached with trembling hands and bowed his head, whispering that the meal was entirely on the house. Lorenzo slid a folded hundred-dollar bill onto the tray anyway, tipping the terrified server with casual grace.
"Let's get one thing straight, Penelope," Lorenzo said as he stood up, towering over the booth. He extended a large, scarred hand down toward her. "This partnership works on your terms, but you play by my rules. You stay at Skadden for now. You keep feeding them clean data while quietly funneling the structural anomalies to me."
Penelope looked down at his outstretched hand. The calloused palm, the gold Patek Philippe watch catching the amber restaurant light—it was a literal deal with the devil. But as she placed her soft, ring-wearing hand into his, the grip was firm, warm, and entirely steady.
"And on Tuesday?" Penelope asked, standing up to face him, realizing with a start that she barely reached his chest. "When my housing coalition presents the zoning irregularities to the board?"
"You read your data," Lorenzo said, a dangerous gleam in his dark eyes. "You let my partners scramble to plug the leaks. And while they're looking at you, we'll drain their offshore accounts dry from the inside."
He turned and walked away, disappearing into the shadows of the exit corridor with Leo trailing silently behind him like a ghost.
Penelope stood alone for a moment at the table, her heart hammering against her ribs, the lingering taste of wine and garlic on her lips. She walked out of Carbone into the cool, damp Manhattan night air, hailing a cab with a sharp, practiced whistle.
When she arrived back at her empty Chelsea apartment, she tossed her clutch onto the kitchen island, kicked off her heels, and opened her laptop.
The screen glowed brightly in the dark room. She plugged in the flash drive Lorenzo had given her. A cascade of encrypted directories appeared on her screen—hundreds of offshore accounts, dummy corporations, and property deeds stretching from Manhattan to Zurich.
She opened the root directory, expecting to find the Moretti Syndicate's financial records. Instead, a single, unencrypted text file popped up automatically on her desktop, timestamped five minutes ago.
