Chapter 9 - The Master Ledger

The envelope contained three things: a burner smartphone with an encrypted local frequency, a set of physical master keys to the basement archives of Skadden Arps, and a handwritten note from Lorenzo himself, scrawled in heavy, dark ink: The archives hold the paper trail they couldn't digitize. Find the original 2021 partnership agreement before 8:00 PM tonight.

Penelope sat in the back of a deserted cab idling outside the restaurant, her fingers tracing the heavy paper of the note. The physical archives. Skadden's basement records room was a labyrinth of steel shelving, microfilm, and paper files dating back three decades—a place where digital scrubbers couldn't reach because the building's historical preservation covenants prohibited network cabling in the sub-level vaults.

By 7:15 PM, Penelope was back inside the office tower.

The building was mostly empty, save for the evening cleaning crew and the hum of security patrols. Using the master key Leo had provided, she slipped past the sub-basement security door, her heels clicking softly against the concrete floor of the archives. Rows upon rows of towering gray filing cabinets stretched out into the dim, fluorescent-lit aisles.

She found cabinet 44-B near the back corner.

Her fingers flew through the hanging folders, scanning labels for the 2021 partnership restructuring—the year Arthur Sterling and Marcus Vance’s father had quietly merged their real estate acquisition portfolios.

At the bottom of the third drawer, her hand brushed against a thick, leather-bound corporate binder. She pulled it out, bringing it over to a metal examination desk under the buzzing overhead lights.

She opened it. The pages were filled with handwritten amendments, capital contribution signatures, and side letters that never made it onto the public electronic registry.

As she flipped through the pages, her breath hitched.

There it was. A side agreement dated November 14, 2021, stipulating that all real estate acquisitions through Hudson Yards Holdings were backed by an unrecorded private equity trust—a trust jointly owned by Arthur Sterling and... Lorenzo Moretti's late uncle, Vincent Moretti.

The corporate rivalry between the Moretti Syndicate and Skadden Arps wasn't a war between enemies. It was a business partnership disguised as a turf war.

"Looking for historical bedtime reading, Penelope?"

A cold, clipped voice echoed from the end of the aisle.

Penelope spun around, slamming the binder shut. Standing at the entrance of the aisle, blocking the only exit out of the archives, was Arthur Sterling. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his white dress shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, and in his right hand, he held a heavy brass paperweight that looked suspiciously like a weapon.

"Arthur," Penelope said, her voice dropping an octave as she backed away from the desk, her hand sliding into her coat pocket to grip the burner phone Leo had given her. "I was just... checking compliance records for the audit."

Arthur smiled, but his eyes were entirely dead. "Compliance, Penelope? Or extortion? Marcus was a fool who couldn't handle his own numbers, but I expected better from you. You really thought you could come in here, dig through forty years of history, and walk out with my family's legacy?"

He took a slow step forward, the heavy brass paperweight catching the harsh fluorescent light.

"Unfortunately for you," Arthur continued smoothly, "basement archives are notoriously dangerous places. People slip on wet concrete all the time. Especially late at night, when no one is watching."
