Chapter 6 - The Unindicted Partner

The harsh blue glow of the laptop monitor illuminated the empty kitchen, casting long, sharp shadows across the granite island. Penelope sat frozen, her breath shallow, her eyes locked on the single line of text at the bottom of the unencrypted file.

Check folder 4B, Penelope—your former boss Marcus Vance isn't just taking credit for your data; he's been laundering bribe money through your own department for six months.

For a full minute, her pulse roared in her ears like incoming tide water. Marcus. The golden boy of Skadden Arps's real estate division. The man whose father sat on the board of Hudson Yards Holdings, the man who had effortlessly stepped over her to take the senior associate promotion she had sacrificed three years of her youth to earn. She had spent weeks blaming corporate systemic bias, cursing the glass ceiling, and wondering why her rigorous mathematical models had been casually dismissed.

The bias hadn't been glass. It had been a shield.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she clicked on folder 4B.

The directory opened instantly, revealing a neatly organized sub-grid of internal billing codes, signature authorizations, and cross-border wire transfers. It was a masterpiece of corporate embezzlement. Marcus hadn't just stolen her data models; he had used her name on sub-contract audit forms to sign off on architectural variances for properties that didn't exist. To Skadden’s compliance officers, any red flags on those accounts appeared under Penelope Hayes's digital stamp of approval. If the federal authorities ever audited the firm's real estate division, Marcus was positioned to let her take the entire fall.

Penelope grabbed her phone off the marble counter. Her thumb hovered over Marcus's contact card. A dozen furious text messages bubbled up in her chest—demanding answers, threatening exposure, screaming for an explanation.

Then she stopped. Her thumb pulled back.

If she confronted Marcus now, she would show her hand. She would alert him that the Moretti Syndicate—or someone with their level of access—had breached Skadden's internal firewall. Marcus would run to his father, scrub the server logs, and twist the narrative to frame her as a rogue rogue analyst who went rogue after missing out on a promotion. She would be fired before sunrise, blacklisted from every major law firm on the East Coast, and possibly facing federal indictment.

She looked back at the screen. Folder 4B wasn't just a revelation of betrayal; it was a weapon.

"Play by my rules," Lorenzo's voice echoed faintly in her memory, low and steady.

Penelope closed her eyes, took a deep, grounding breath, and let the anger drain out of her, replacing it with a cold, analytical clarity. If Marcus wanted to play corporate games using her name, she was going to change the rules of the board.

She spent the next three hours pulling every transaction record from folder 4B, cross-referencing the wire destinations with public municipal filings, and compiling a clean, unassailable data trail. By 4:00 AM, she had isolated the exact bank accounts in the Cayman Islands where the bribe money had been routed. She didn't send them to Lorenzo. She didn't leak them to her housing coalition.

She saved them to a secure, encrypted cloud drive linked only to her personal phone, then shut the laptop lid with a soft click.
