Chapter 10 - The Balance of Power

The fallout inside the Palmer House Grand Ballroom was swift and absolute.

Within minutes of Beatrice's presentation hitting the master screens, federal agents stationed outside—not Arthur's compromised marshals, but federal investigators who had been quietly briefed by Enzo's legal team hours earlier—stepped through the ballroom doors.

They bypassed the terrified city council members, walked straight past the frozen real estate developers, and placed Arthur Pendelton in heavy steel handcuffs.

Arthur didn't fight back. He didn't yell or make threats.

He simply stared at the floor, his professional reputation, his career, and his illicit syndicate connections evaporating under the harsh glare of public scrutiny and unassailable forensic evidence.

As the federal agents led him away in disgrace, Arthur raised his head just enough to look at Beatrice standing on the dais.

His eyes weren't filled with anger anymore; they were filled with a cold, knowing warning.

"You think you won, Beatrice," Arthur muttered quietly as he was escorted past the stage. "You think Enzo Costa is your savior. But men like that don't protect people out of the goodness of their hearts. When he's done using your audit trail, you'll find out what it really means to owe him."

The words hung in the air for a fraction of a second, but Beatrice didn't flinch. She met Arthur's gaze head-on, her chin held high, until the heavy double doors closed behind him.

The room erupted into a chaotic storm of flashing camera lights, murmuring reporters, and frantic phone calls as the city's financial elite rushed to distance themselves from Deloitte's ruined managing partner.

Enzo stepped up onto the dais, his dark obsidian eyes locked onto Beatrice with an expression that was impossible to read—a mixture of profound respect, dangerous intensity, and an undeniable, consuming heat.

"Well performed, Miss Gallagher," Enzo murmured, his rich baritone cutting through the surrounding noise. "I think you just put half of Cook County out of business."

"I just did my job," Beatrice replied, turning to face him. Her heart was pounding, not with fear, but with the exhilarating rush of total agency. For the first time in her life, she had taken her full weight, her intelligence, and her courage, and she had used them to shatter the cages built around her. "Though I suppose your introduction helped clear the room."

Enzo’s lips curved into a slow, dark smile. He reached out, his hand gently resting against the small of her back, pulling her slightly closer amidst the swirling sea of society reporters and corporate onlookers.

"My world is dangerous, Beatrice," Enzo said softly, his voice dropping an octave as he looked down into her eyes. "Now that Arthur is gone, the North Side enforcers aren't going to vanish. They're going to want answers about what happened to their accounts."

Beatrice didn't step away. Instead, she leaned slightly into his touch, feeling the solid, immovable strength of his frame.

The fear that had once defined her life was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, fierce certainty.

"Let them look for answers," Beatrice whispered, a confident, brilliant smile gracing her lips. "They'll have to get past the auditor first."

Enzo’s dark eyes flared with sudden, primal heat, his grip on her tightening just enough to remind her that while she had won this battle, the true game had only just begun.
