Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strike

The sun was just beginning to streak the Chicago skyline with pale gray light when Beatrice finally stood up from the oak desk.

Her eyes were burning from exhaustion, and her back ached from hours of hunching over the terminal, but the glowing monitors in front of her told a complete story.

Enzo sat across from her in a leather armchair, a cup of black coffee cooling untouched on the side table.

He had spent the last two hours quietly coordinating a network of informants, financial analysts, and syndicate lieutenants across the city, consolidating every piece of leverage they possessed.

"It's all here," Beatrice said, tapping the mechanical keyboard one last time. A massive, interconnected web of corporate entities, shell companies, and offshore bank accounts illuminated the center screen. "Arthur didn't just embezzle from your real estate portfolio. He was using the North Side enforcers to acquire distressed properties across the Loop at below-market value, then flipping them through Deloitte's shell accounts to wash money for the old guard."

Enzo leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, studying the data points with cold, analytical precision.

"And the connection to Derek?" Enzo asked.

"Derek was their patsy from the beginning," Beatrice explained, a bitter taste rising in her mouth as she thought of her ex-boyfriend's cruel, pathetic obsession. "Derek thought he was running a high-stakes real estate hustle. They promised him a percentage of the flipped properties if he could get inside Deloitte's acquisition files. When I broke up with him, he panicked because he realized he couldn't deliver the data—and the fifty grand they paid him was already gone to his gambling debts."

"So they gave him the military-grade micro-tag," Enzo murmured, his dark eyes flashing. "They wanted him to follow you to the office, grab the data files himself, and take the fall when the audit discovered the missing capital."

"Instead, he found me in the executive suite, and I ran straight into your elevator," Beatrice finished, looking directly at him. "Which completely disrupted their timeline."

Enzo stood up, walking slowly around the desk until he stood directly beside her chair.

He reached down, his warm fingers gently tracing the line of her shoulder, a touch that sent a sudden, electric heat through her exhausted body.

"You didn't just disrupt their timeline, Beatrice," Enzo said softly. "You broke their entire machine. Arthur Pendelton thought he could use corporate bureaucracy as a shield against the Syndicate. He forgot that numbers don't lie, and neither does a good auditor."

"What do we do now?" she asked, her heart skipping a beat at the closeness of his body. "If we take this data to the SEC or the federal prosecutor, Arthur's connections will try to bury it."

"We aren't taking it to the federal prosecutor," Enzo said, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips. "We're taking it to the Chicago Board of Trade's annual gala tonight. Every major developer, city councilman, and senior banking partner in Illinois will be in attendance. Including Arthur Pendelton and his North Side backers."

Beatrice stared at him in disbelief. "You're going to expose them publicly? In front of the entire city?"

"Publicly, legally, and definitively," Enzo said, his voice dropping into an absolute register of power. "Arthur wanted to play a high-stakes game of corporate finance and criminal politics. We're going to give him an audience he'll never forget. But you won't be hiding behind a terminal, Beatrice."

Enzo reached out, his hand cupping her chin, forcing her to look up into his piercing gaze.

"You're going to walk into the Grand Ballroom on my arm as my equal," Enzo whispered, his voice thick with an intensity that made the air in the room feel heavy. "And you are going to deliver the final audit report yourself."
