Chapter 4 - The North Side Shadow

The atmosphere inside the Gold Coast brownstone shifted instantly from a quiet sanctuary to a heavily fortified staging ground.
Within minutes of Marco’s report, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway as three more armed syndicate operatives took up positions outside the study.
Enzo stood by the desk, his phone pressed to his ear, speaking in rapid, hushed Italian to someone on the other end.
Beatrice sat frozen in her chair, her hands trembling over the keyboard. The professional detachment she had relied on all night was completely gone.
"They have him?" she asked, her voice cracking slightly as Enzo clicked the phone shut and dropped it onto the mahogany desk.
"They have him," Enzo confirmed, his face a mask of cold fury. "Which means our timeline just accelerated significantly."
"Why would the North Side enforcers take Derek?" Beatrice asked, standing up from her chair, her mind racing through the financial data she had just uncovered. "He’s a nobody. He’s just a corrupt real estate agent with a gambling problem."
"He’s not just a real estate agent anymore, Beatrice," Enzo said, walking over to a concealed wall safe behind a row of law books and punching in a digital combination. "If Arthur Pendelton is funneling money out of my portfolio, and the North Side crew intercepted Derek before my men could secure him, it means Pendelton doesn’t just have a corrupt auditor in his pocket."
Enzo pulled a heavy, matte-black Glock 19 from the safe, sliding a loaded magazine into the grip with a sharp, metallic click.
"It means Pendelton answers to the old guard," Enzo finished, tucking the weapon into a hidden holster beneath his jacket. "And they’ve been using my own real estate acquisitions to fund a hostile takeover of my syndication routes."
Beatrice’s breath caught in her throat. "An internal war."
"Not yet," Enzo said, turning his piercing gaze back to her. "Right now, it's a chess match. But they just made a very aggressive move by taking Miller off our loading dock."
"If they have Derek," Beatrice said, a cold dread washing over her, "he’s going to tell them everything."
"He’s going to tell them that you’re here," Enzo corrected quietly.
Beatrice stumbled backward, her hip bumping against the edge of the desk. The terror she had felt in the office tower on Wacker Drive returned, magnified a hundredfold.
"If they know I found the ledger," she whispered, "if they know I know about Arthur Pendelton..."
"They’ll come for you," Enzo finished. He closed the distance between them in two long strides, his large frame shielding her from the rest of the room. There was no hesitation in his movements, no cold corporate distance left. There was only raw, protective dominance. "Which is why you are staying right here in this brownstone. Marco and his detail are locking down the perimeter."
"You're leaving," Beatrice said, reading the absolute determination etched into the sharp lines of his face.
"I have to pay a visit to some old acquaintances on the North Side," Enzo said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "I need to find out what Derek told them before they decide to tie up loose ends."
"Enzo, wait," Beatrice said, instinctively reaching out to grab the sleeve of his Brioni jacket. Her fingers curled into the expensive fabric. "It’s a trap. If they’re expecting you to come looking for Derek..."
Enzo looked down at her hand on his arm, then slowly raised his eyes to meet hers. A strange, fierce warmth flickered in the dark depths of his gaze—something entirely at odds with the violent world he inhabited.
"Let them expect me," Enzo said softly. He covered her hand with his own, his grip firm, grounding, and absolute. "I built this empire from the pavement up, Beatrice. Nobody takes what belongs to me."
Before she could answer, the secure intercom on the desk hissed to life again.
"Boss," Marco’s voice barked through the speaker, tense and urgent. "We’ve got movement on the private security feed. A car just pulled up into the alley behind the brownstone. They aren't North Side enforcers."
Enzo went rigid. "Who is it?"
May you like
"It’s Deloitte corporate security," Marco said. "And they're accompanied by federal marshals."
