Chapter 17 - The Unmasking

Daniel blinked, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What?"
"Mia is an only child," I said, opening my briefcase and pulling out a laminated birth registry record obtained from the state archives thirty minutes earlier. "Her parents died eight years ago in Ohio. The foundation grant your father approved wasn't for medical expenses. It was forty percent ownership in Vanguard Crest Holdings—the entity currently holding the deed to my parents' house."
Daniel looked from the paper in my hand to his mother. "Mom? What is she talking about?"
Diane’s composure slipped for a fraction of a second. A tiny, tight twitch appeared at the corner of her lips. "Daniel, don't listen to her. She's desperate. She's grasping at straws to justify breaking our hearts."
"Arthur," Daniel turned to Finch, his voice rising, cracking into genuine panic. "What is Vanguard Crest?"
Arthur Finch looked away, his jaw tight, his silver cane planted firmly into the wet stone. He didn't answer. A lawyer knows when a line has been crossed into criminal liability, and Finch was smart enough not to perjure himself on the courthouse steps.
"She played you, Daniel," I said, stepping closer so he could see the cold, absolute truth in my eyes. "Mia didn't want you. She wanted the equity in the firm’s private placement fund. And your father didn't use the house to keep me in line for you. He used the house to ensure my father’s municipal contracting board would approve the riverfront rezoning project Walker & Associates is building next spring."
Daniel stumbled backward, as if he had been struck physically in the chest. "No. Dad said... Dad said the wedding was about consolidating our community ties."
"The wedding was the grease on the wheel, Daniel. You were the bait, Julian was the idiot, and I was the collateral."
From behind the revolving doors of the courthouse, two men in dark suits and a woman in a trench coat stepped out into the rain. Detective Sarah Martinez showed her badge to Finch, then turned directly to Diane Walker.
"Mrs. Walker," Martinez said, her voice echoing off the stone facade. "We have a warrant for your personal financial records regarding Vanguard Crest Holdings and unauthorized mortgage liens issued within the county jurisdiction. You and Mr. Finch need to come with us."
Diane’s face drained of every drop of color. She looked at me, her eyes widening in pure, aristocratic horror. "You... you called the state police on your future in-laws?"
May you like
"You stopped being my in-laws the moment you put a price tag on my parents' roof," I said.
