Chapter 18 - The Fracture

The scene outside the courthouse collapsed in slow motion.

Detective Martinez guided a silent, rigid Diane Walker down the granite steps toward an unmarked sedan. Arthur Finch, ever the pragmatist, immediately pulled his phone from his pocket, walking three paces behind, whispering urgent instructions to a criminal defense partner downtown.

Daniel stood completely alone on the wet plaza, rain soaking through his wool coat, his umbrella forgotten on the ground beside his feet.

"Emma," he croaked, taking a step toward me. His hands were shaking. "I didn't know. On everything I have ever loved, I swear to God... I didn't know about Vanguard Crest. I didn't know about Mia's share. I thought Dad was just helping Julian out of a bad investment so your family wouldn't be ashamed."

"That's your greatest flaw, Daniel," I said, looking at him with pity rather than anger. "You never ask where the money comes from as long as it keeps your life comfortable. You let your father use other people's lives as poker chips, and as long as you got to sit at the head of the table and play the benevolent provider, you never cared to look at the bodies under the floorboards."

"I loved you," he choked out, tears finally breaking through his defenses, mixing with the rain on his cheeks. "I was going to buy us the house in Rhinebeck. I told my father I’d step down from the litigation department if he didn't treat you with respect—"

"You handed Mia the first cut of the fish, Daniel," I interrupted, my voice dropping into that quiet, impenetrable stillness that terrified him. "At our rehearsal dinner. In front of my mother. In front of your father. You did it to show me where the hierarchy stood. You wanted me to know that in the Walker family, loyalty to the brand comes before love, before dignity, and before truth."

He closed his eyes, his shoulders hunching forward as if under an unbearable physical weight. "I was an idiot. I thought... I thought if I kept everyone happy, everything would work out."

"Nothing works out when it’s built on a lie," I said.

My phone vibrated in my hand. It was a text notification from the county registrar’s emergency portal.

*Filing Status: Lien Document #48921-M (412 Maple Street) marked SUSPENDED pending criminal inquiry. County Lis Pendens active.*

The house was safe. The state had stepped in between my parents and Richard Walker’s auction block.

I turned my back on Daniel and walked toward the courthouse doors.

"Emma!" he screamed after me, his voice tearing against the wind. "What about Julian? What happens to your brother?"

I stopped at the glass doors, but I didn't turn around.

May you like

"Julian gets to answer for what he did," I said. "Just like you."
