Chapter 27 - The Corrupted Bloodline

The air in the subterranean vault felt thick, like water pressing against my lungs.

"You knew," I whispered, staring across the table at Mia Lin. My voice didn't sound like my own; it sounded hollow, drained of warmth. "You knew what this document said."

Mia didn't flinch. She kept her hands flat on the polished mahogany table, her gaze unwavering behind her dark glasses.

"I suspected," Mia said quietly. "Clara's private journals hinted at it, but the formal legal assertion was locked in this box. Clara sealed this deposition twenty-four hours before the crash on Route 9. She knew Richard’s depravity better than anyone."

"Julian..." The word caught in my throat, a wave of violent disgust rising from my stomach. "Julian was going to marry me. He proposed. His mother planned an entire society wedding at the St. Regis. Did Julian know?"

"No," Mia said firmly. "Julian is weak, arrogant, and viciously insecure, but he is fundamentally stupid. Richard never would have trusted him with that truth. Richard intended to use Julian as an instrument of consolidation. If Julian married you, the trust merged under Sterling family control. If you ever discovered the truth afterward, what would you have done? Sued for divorce? Exposed your own marriage as an incestuous fraud to the press? Richard was building a cage of shame so horrific that you would have stayed silent for the rest of your life just to survive the humiliation."

I looked down at the handwriting of the mother I had never known. Clara’s script was neat, precise, unapologetic. She had foreseen Richard’s moves twenty-four years before they happened. She had known that the only way to protect me was to make the truth so dangerous that Richard couldn't touch it without detonating his own existence.

"And Arthur?" I asked, my chest aching for the man who had raised me in Westchester. "My father... he knew this?"

"Arthur knew Richard assaulted Clara," Mia said, her voice softening for the first time. "He did not know Richard was the biological father. Clara swore to Arthur that the father was an anonymous partner who had died. She lied to Arthur to protect him, Emma. She knew that if Arthur knew Richard was your father, Arthur would have confronted Richard with a gun twenty-four years ago and spent his life in Sing Sing."

I reached into the box and opened the small velvet jewel box that sat beneath the ledgers.

Inside was a simple gold signet ring engraved with a falcon—the crest of the Vance family—and a micro-cassette tape dated November 14, 1999.

"What is that?" I asked.

"The audio recording Clara made during her final confrontation in Richard's office," Mia said. "The one where he offered to pay off Arthur’s debts, clear the mortgage on the Hastings house, and set up a dummy trust if she aborted the pregnancy and surrendered her audit findings."

Mia checked her watch. It was 8:15 AM.

"The Surrogate Court hearing begins in seventy-five minutes. Richard’s lawyers are already filing into courtroom 404 at the Manhattan Municipal Building. They think they’re walking into an uncontested default motion against an orphaned estate."

I picked up the cassette, the signet ring, and the wax-sealed deposition.

The grief that had paralyzed me twenty minutes ago hardened into cold, crystalline resolve. The fear was gone. The confusion was gone. The girl who had cried in the restaurant restroom while Julian fed fish to another woman was completely dead.

"Let's not keep my father waiting," I said.
