Chapter 8 - The Trust’s Dark Secret

Nathan didn't reach for the envelope immediately. His eyes remained locked on Arthur, weighing the threat behind the man's frantic demeanor.
"If you have something to tell us, you can say it here," Nathan said coldly. "I'm done playing games with this family's shadows."
"It's not a game, Nathan," Arthur muttered, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper as he leaned heavily against the wall. "The wealth, the towers, the corporate holdings—none of it belongs to us cleanly. Thirty years ago, when the foundation was first established, grandfather didn't build it on venture capital or inheritance. He made a pact with a syndicate to bail out the family’s shipping losses. A syndicate that never forgets a debt, and never lets an outsider into the bloodline without a price."
I stared at Arthur, a cold shiver running down my spine. The scars on my back suddenly felt tight and sensitive, as if the memory of old pain was reacting to a new danger.
"What does that have to do with me?" I asked, stepping closer to the bed.
"Everything," Arthur hissed, pointing a shaking finger at me. "When you married into this family, your name was officially logged into the corporate registry as the primary marital asset holder under the old trust clauses. That means the syndicate doesn't just see you as a housemaid or a gold-digger, Emily. They see you as the collateral."
Nathan’s face went completely rigid. "Collateral for what?"
Before Arthur could answer, a low, metallic groan echoed from somewhere deep within the walls of the penthouse suite—followed instantly by the total collapse of the overhead lighting.
