Chapter 9 - Darkness in the Penthouse

The ambient glow of the city lights outside the floor-to-ceiling windows flickered once and died, snuffed out by a synchronized blackout that plunged the entire forty-second floor into shadow.

"Stay behind me," Nathan commanded in a dark, fierce whisper, his hand sweeping back to grab my wrist with an iron grip.

In the sudden stillness, the sound of heavy, mechanized clicks echoed from the private foyer. The sound of deadbolts sliding home one by one—not from the inside, but from the outside control panel. Someone had remotely overridden the master security grid and locked us inside our own suite.

"They're here," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with stark terror as he backed away toward the dark corner of the bedroom. "They tracked the registry ping the moment Margaret accessed the legal files tonight. They know you saw the documents, Emily."

"Who is they, Arthur?" Nathan demanded, his voice slicing through the heavy silence as he pulled a heavy brass fireplace poker from the hearth beside the bed.

"The board," Arthur breathed. "The real board."

Suddenly, the red emergency backup lights kicked on overhead, casting a harsh, crimson wash across the room.

Through the double glass doors of our private balcony—fifty feet above the rainy Manhattan streets—a shadow moved. Then another. Heavy tactical boots stepped silently onto the wet glass patio, followed by the muffled sound of a glass-cutter biting smoothly into the reinforced balcony door.

Nathan didn't hesitate. He thrust me gently behind the heavy mahogany dresser, putting himself directly between the balcony and where I stood.

"Don't move," he ordered, his eyes fixed on the balcony glass as a diamond-cut circle of glass fell inward with a soft clink.
