Chapter 2 - The Exit Strategy

The heavy oak door of the study slammed against the wall behind me as I walked out into the dimly lit hallway.

"Eleanor! Get back here right now!" Adrian’s furious roar echoed down the corridor, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps.

I didn't break my stride. I moved with calm, measured steps toward the grand staircase, ignoring the burning agony across my back. By the time Adrian reached the top landing, I was already halfway down, sliding my secure phone out from my coat pocket and dialing a direct, encrypted extension.

"Report," a crisp, professional voice answered on the first ring.

"Marcus, it’s Eleanor Hart," I said clearly, keeping my voice steady as I headed straight for the front foyer. "The preliminary separation papers have been formally presented and rejected. Activate Phase One of the Apex restructuring protocol."

"Understood, Mrs. Hart," Marcus replied, his tone instantly shifting into high gear. "All offshore accounts, revolving credit lines, and bridge loans currently backing Cole Industries are queued for immediate freeze. Shall we execute the primary collateral seizure?"

"Not yet," I said, pausing at the heavy front door and pulling my coat tightly around my shoulders. "Let him reach out to Vale Capital first. Let Malcolm Vale think he’s about to swallow Cole Industries whole. I want them both standing in the boardroom when the rug gets pulled out from under their feet."

"Consider it done. We’ll initiate the capital recall at 9:00 AM tomorrow."

I hung up just as Adrian rounded the bottom of the stairs, breathless and purple-faced with rage, his fists clenched at his sides.

"Who the hell were you talking to?" Adrian demanded, blocking the front exit. "You think you can call some lawyer and scare me? Cole Industries is backed by Vale Capital! Malcolm Vale is injecting three point two billion dollars into our restructuring accounts this week! You are a nobody, Eleanor! You don't exist without me!"

I looked up at him—at the man I had loved, supported, and quietly financed for eight years, who had stood by while his mistress had me beaten with a belt over a scratched Porsche. The pity I felt for him was absolute.

"You're right, Adrian," I said softly, stepping right past him and pulling open the front door. "I don't exist. Not to you. But tomorrow morning, you're going to find out exactly who owns your entire world."

Before he could grab my arm, I stepped out onto the porch, pulling the heavy door shut behind me, leaving him standing alone in the dark foyer of a house he no longer owned.
