Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

The executive boardroom of Cole Industries hummed with an air of arrogant celebration.
At precisely 8:55 AM, I stepped out of the private elevator on the twentieth floor, wearing a sharp, charcoal-gray Chanel suit that I had deliberately kept locked away in my private city penthouse. My hair was pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, and my posture carried the absolute, unyielding authority of a principal shareholder.
As I walked down the glass-walled corridor toward the main boardroom doors, corporate executives scurried past, murmuring hushed greetings. None of them recognized me. To them, I was just another corporate consultant or legal representative.
Through the frosted glass doors of the boardroom, I could hear Adrian’s voice booming with smug, triumphant laughter.
"Gentlemen, as soon as Malcolm Vale signs off on the final bridge transfer this morning, Cole Industries will be completely insulated from market volatility," Adrian was telling his senior partners. "We are doubling our quarterly projections, and any minor... domestic disruptions... have been permanently resolved."
A chorus of sycophantic agreement rippled through the room.
I signaled to the lead security guard stationed outside the doors. "Open them."
The heavy double doors swung open smoothly, cutting off Adrian mid-sentence. Every head at the mahogany conference table turned toward the entrance in annoyance.
Adrian sat at the head of the table, looking sharp in a bespoke Italian suit, with Vanessa seated proudly to his right, wearing an expensive diamond necklace that had likely been purchased with corporate expense funds.
"Excuse me," Adrian snapped, standing up from his chair. "This is a closed executive meeting. Who let you in here? Security, remove this—"
He stopped dead in his tracks.
His eyes widened, tracking up from my heels, past my tailored suit, to my face. The color instantly vanished from his cheeks.
"Eleanor?" he choked out, his voice pitching high with bewildered shock. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get past building security?"
Vanessa sneered, crossing her arms. "Did you follow him here to beg for more money after he threw you out? Honestly, Adrian, your ex-wife has zero self-respect."
I didn't look at Vanessa. I kept my gaze locked squarely on Adrian as I walked slowly down the center aisle of the boardroom, my heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor.

"I didn't come here to beg, Adrian," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent, stunned room. "I came here to collect."
