Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The night air was biting, but the cold wind felt like a breath of pure life against my feverish skin. I slid into the driver's seat of my understated black sedan—the same unassuming vehicle Adrian had mocked for years—and punched the ignition.
Instead of heading back to the quiet suburban neighborhood where our marital home stood, I drove straight into the heart of downtown, parking in the subterranean executive garage of the city's most secure high-rise tower: Hart Global Holdings.
The security guards at the lobby gates didn't just check my ID; they snapped to immediate attention, pressing the private elevator override button before I even reached the turnstiles.
"Good evening, Mrs. Hart," the head security officer said respectfully. "Your suite on the forty-fifth floor is fully prepared. Dr. Vance is waiting on-call for your medical evaluation."
"Thank you, David," I replied, keeping my posture rigid.
When the private elevator doors slid open on the top floor, Marcus Vance was standing there holding a thick medical kit alongside a secure corporate dossier. As soon as he saw my face—and the subtle, rigid way I was holding my shoulders—his professional demeanor instantly darkened with quiet fury.
"Mrs. Hart, what happened?" Marcus asked, stepping forward to assist me as I walked into the minimalist, glass-walled office suite.
"An occupational hazard of divorcing a narcissist," I said quietly, sitting down on the examination couch and wincing as my back touched the cushions. "Let's just take care of the bruising. We have a very busy morning ahead of us."
Ten minutes later, Dr. Vance—our corporate physician—finished applying specialized antiseptic cream and heavy sterile dressings across the deep welts on my back. He shook his head in disgust as he closed the medical case.
"This is domestic assault, Eleanor," Dr. Vance said grimly. "If we file these photographs with the police right now, we can have a warrant issued for Adrian Cole’s arrest before sunrise."
"No police warrants yet," I instructed firmly, pulling my blouse back over my shoulders and buttoning my cardigan. "If we involve local law enforcement tonight, it becomes a messy domestic dispute in the tabloids. I want a corporate execution, not a scandal. I want Adrian to stand before his board of directors tomorrow morning believing he is master of the universe—right before he realizes he is completely bankrupt."
Marcus stepped up to the desk, sliding a certified financial printout across the glass surface. "Everything is in position. Vale Capital thinks they're buying out Cole Industries at a bargain price. They transferred their initial commitment of five hundred million into the holding escrow account this afternoon. And..." Marcus paused, a cold smile touching his lips. "The escrow account is registered under Hart Global's primary subsidiary."
I looked down at the numbers, a dark, satisfying calm settling deep into my bones.

"Good," I whispered. "Let Malcolm Vale sink every last dollar he has into the trap. Tomorrow, we close the jaws."
